Time Out!

Since I have finals and a vacation coming up, I am taking a break, but should resume on Thurs, wrapping up the ACC and Big 12, and the AFC in the NFL. By Mon, I should be done with the Big 10, Pac 10, and the SEC. Next Friday I will hit the NFC.

2007 Big East Preview

Big East

Now, the first of the major conferences. You will notice an * by several teams, this denotes that I believe that particular team will make a bowl game in 2007. This may be the most competitive conference as far as the winner, the top 4 teams may only be separated by 2 games. Now, the time is right for the Big East teams to have a strong 2007-and gain a big win in a BCS Bowl, as West Virginia did in the 2006 Sugar Bowl over Georgia.

Who’s New:

Steve Kragthorpe-Louisville Cardinals
Brian Kelly-Cincinnati Bearcats

Who’s on the Hot Seat:

Dave Wannstedt-Pittsburgh Panthers
Randy Edsel-UConn Huskies
Greg Robinson-Syracuse Orange

8. Syracuse Orange. There might be good news for the Orange-the offense should move the chains. The bad news, they will still be the worst team in the Big East. The fall of this program amazes me, despite having a good AD, and a very good (RICH!) alumni, this program should be better. This team has increased win totals under Robinson in all of his years, but his might be the last. The only good thing-Place Kicker Patrick Shadle is back. That’s about it.

7. Connecticut Huskies. Randy Edsel may not be on the hot seat, but things are getting warm. Last season was an abysmal 4-8, and they did it with a young team. The youngsters should be more experienced, and they might get a bowl nod since they have an easy non conference schedule, but this team cannot compete with the top teams, so no bowl game. The Huskies get 14 starters back, and if they stay healthy, can be a team in 2008 that makes noise, but not in 2007

6. Pittsburgh Panthers. Here is the good news for Dave Wannstedt-15 starters are back. The bad news-replace Tyler Palko at QB. If they had a returning starter, Pitt may be in the fold for the Big East race. It will be a growing year, but if this team manages a 6-6 record, the likelihood of Wannstedt returning may be strong-but the last 3 games of the year are the top teams in the conference-Rutgers, S Florida and West Virginia.

5. Cincinnati Bearcats *. New head coach Brian Kelly inherits a very scrappy ball club. Gone is the ball control offense, replaced by the Spread, which means the Bearcats should be a bit more entertaining to watch. The Bearcats are helped by RB Greg Moore and WR Derrick Stewart to make the big plays. On defense, 8 starters return, as does the 4-3 the Bearcats have run the past few years. Brian Kelly has made every program he is at a winner, but to rise to the top of the Big East, he needs a few years.

4. Louisville Cardinals *. I am shocked as you are, but the Cards have a lot of work ahead of them in 2007. Steve Kragthorpe takes over for Bobby Petrino who has a lot of issues with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. On offense, the Cards have Brian Brohm, who is forecasted as the top pick of the 2008 NFL Draft back at QB-but no Michael Bush or Colby Smith at RB, but both starters at WR are back. On defense, the Cards must replace 7 departed starters-but as much talent as they have, it should work. Big road games include Kentucky, NC State, and big games in conference with Cincy, West Virginia and South Florida, mean that if the Cards win the conference-it would be a miracle.

3. South Florida Bulls *. Jim Leavitt has built this program from quite literally the ground up. He is the only coach the Bulls have known, and is truly the BMOC. He guided the Bulls to their first ever bowl win last year, and looks to make bigger strides in 2007. The Bulls have QB Matt Grothe back on offense, and as a freshman last year put up impressive numbers-and was the leading rusher, despite setting school records in completion percentage, and passing yards. But Grothe should get a break from being the leading ball carrier as Benjamin Williams is healthy this year. On defense, the Bulls 7 returning starters give them a solid nucleus of players who can contribute. The schedule is favorable-West Virginia and Louisville have to play the Bulls at home.

2. Rutgers Scarlet Knights *. Here is why Rutgers will be good once again-QB Mike Teel and RB Ray Rice are back on offense, and DT Eric Foster and LB Brandon Renkart are back on defense. With 13 starters back, the Scarlet Knights want to prove the 2006 season was no fluke-and they will. Only Louisville will be the lone road challenge in the conference, as the other big shots have to come to Rutgers. The Knights have the talent, and still might pull off a conference title, and make Greg Schiano a giant in the college game.

1. West Virginia Mountaineers *. The Mountaineers have what every team wishes-a crushing RB, a dual threat at QB, and a defense that stuffs the competition. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has brought to Huntington what legendary coach Don Nehlen couldn’t-consistency. If they stay healthy, QB Pat White and Steve Slaton will be up for the Heisman, and the Mountaineers will play a big part in the Big East, but also the national title. One way or another-the Mountaineers will be in New Orleans.

2007 Independents Preview

The only team that even has a chance of making it to a BCS game might be Notre Dame. Navy has a deal to go to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, and Army, well, they are the bravest men we have in this country. Since there is no conference crown at stake, let’s see how their seasons will shake out, and what possibilities there are for a Bowl game.

Who’s New:

Stan Brock-Army Black Knights

Army Black Knights. Stan Brock is the new head man at West Point. The former offensive lineman for the NFL’s Saints and Chargers has a tough task ahead of him. The good news is Brock is not putting in a new offense or defense. But a team that won 3 games last year needed some new lift, and maybe the younger Brock can light a new fire under these players, something Bobby Ross just could not do. Army has not won more than 4 games since 1996-and will continue that streak in 2007.

Navy Midshipmen. I am only typing this name once, Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada returns for Navy head coach Paul Johnson, who has used 4 different QB’s to take him to 4 straight Bowl games. Not bad. On offense, it is all about the option, and the slot option attack the Middies use is damn near perfect. But the problem for Navy is its defense. Only 2 starters return on that side of the ball, so look for some big growing pains there. If all goes well, the Poinsettia Bowl will be happy to have the Middies. All should go well.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Charlie Weiss has had a helluva time adjusting from the NFL to the College ranks. He coaches a team that has lost an NCAA record 9 straight bowl games, and has been exposed by quicker teams like Michigan, USC, Ohio State and LSU which have taken advantage of the Irish lack of speed. This year will be even more difficult-3 of the first 5 games for the Irish are on the road, but 4 of the last 5 are at home. On offense, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen are battling for the starting QB, now that Brady Quinn is in the NFL. The Irish defense has a lot of rebuilding to do as well, only 5 starters are back. This is the year that we will see if Charlie Weiss can really coach-most pundits have the Irish ranked behind teams like Arizona, Arkansas and BYU. If this team wins more than 7 games, Weiss is coach of the year. But expect a 6-6 team in South Bend this year.

2007 NFL Preview-AFC North

Two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers did not win this division-but managed to win the Super Bowl. Baltimore won the division last year-and laid an egg in the Playoffs. When all is said and done, this is one of the tougher divisions. The Steelers and the Ravens have the best defenses in the NFL. The Bengals have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Who's New:

Mike Tomlin-Pittsburgh Steelers

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Romeo Crennel-Cleveland Browns

4. Cleveland Browns. I thought this was the breakout team of 2006, and I was dead wrong. The Browns struggled, but have some good things to look forward to -in 2008. Despite an impressive draft, Cleveland has some holes to fill, particulary on offesne. Jamal Lewis was a good trade-4 years ago. The tailback situation needs to be addressed, as does quarterback. Brady Quinn was a good pickup-but at the expense of a 1st rounder in 2008. On defense, things look bright. Kamerion Wimbley was a force on the outside LB position, and should continue to improve. The secondary looks much better and should reduce the big plays. Bottom line-Cleveland has too many questions as a team, and if Quinn is put in the starting line up, expect growin pains on offense, and a defense that still needs a strong line. Its not your year.
PREDICTED FINISH: 4-12

3. Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin has the ulttmate job security. Unless he fails to win a game, he should be the coach here for at least 8 years minimum. The good news is he is not changing the defense, despite his use of the Cover 2 defense as a DC for the Vikings. The bad news is the offense, which looks to throw the ball more under new OC Bruce Arians. What works for the Steelers is a ball control, clock grinding offense, and that is what the Steelers need to do. Not that they don't have the talent. But, things should work well, if Roethlisberger can over come the awful 2006 season. Bottom line-The Steelers will be much better in 2007.
PREDICTED FINISH: 9-7

2. Baltimore Ravens. I dissed the Ravens last year, and was proved right. Steve McNair is still a QB I would love to have, but I only question Baltimore's offense. The defense is one of the best in the NFL the last 8 years, so you can't question them there. They shored up that unit quite well, so they are alright. Willis McGahee was a great pick up at RB, but the O-line is suspect. The only big play WR is Derrick Mason, and he is getting old. Yamon Figures should breathe some life into the deep ball, provided he stays healthy. Bottom line-Baltimore may struggle at times, but they are still better than the Steelers-but not by much.
PREDICTED FINISH: 9-7

1. Cincinnati Bengals. Carson Palmer is healthy, most of the off field issues have been settled, and the defense should improve. All of this spells 2007 is the year the Bengals get back to the top of the division. Carson Palmer looked to me like he rushed back into action last year, and it showed. The Bengals were inconsistent in 2006 to say the least. You look great against the Saints one week, the next, you lose to Cleveland. The defense should be good enough-no offensive powerhouses in this division. The offense is dangerous-stop Rudi Johnson from running or TJ Houshmanzadeh and Chad Johnson from catching passes. Bottom line-If there are no injuries, a Super Bowl is not to far from reality
PREDICTED FINISH: 11-5

Posts

On Wed-I will finish the AFC. I have ignored the NFL and apologize profusely.

Next Monday, I start breaking down the first of the major conferences-the Big East, and the 3 Independants. I might, repeat, might add in another conference.

I also hope to finish the NFC on next Wed, and get that out of the way as well.

Well, have fun!

2007 Mountain West Preview

The Mountain West is the reaon for the new BCS format. Remeber Utah a few years ago? Well, they were the first mid major to win a BCS game, and now, if you win this conference, you might go to a major bowl game. Not bad, huh? So, who will win it this year? Will the champ go to the BCS? Read on!

Who's New:

Troy Calhoun-Air Force

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Sonny Lubick-Colorado St
Mike Sanford-UNLV
Joe Glenn-Wyoming

9. Air Force Falcons. All you need to know is the West Coast offense is the new system, sprinkled with the option attack the Falcons have used for years. This team is a few years from being mediocre, and Troy Calhoun may regret leaving the Texans for the Falcons, but needs time to get things done.

8. UNLV Rebels. The spread option did not work well for the Rebs last year, but there is otimism this could be a breakout year for the Rebs. 13 starters return, but if things do not get better, expect a new man in 2008. Finding an O-line and QB are the offense's top priorities, and establishing the front 7 is the defensive priority.

7. San Diego St Aztecs. The good new for Chuck Long is this-9 starters return on the Aztec offense. The bad-only 4 return on defense. Expect the rushing game to be vital to the Aztecs this year-but someone MUST emerge at QB. On defense, help everywhere is needed. Believe it or not-this could be a 6-6 team this year.

6. Wyoming Cowboys. A surprise to say the least, winning 5 of the last 7 games last year to go 6-6. But the lack of depth on the O-line, and on the D-line mean this is another rebuilding year for the Cowboys. A 6-6 year would not be too far a stretch.

5. Colorado St Rams. Now normally, if you return 17 starters, you might be onto something special. Not so fast my friend! The CSU Rams went 4-8 last year, and the savior of the program head coach Sonny Lubick has fans wondering about the direction of the program. There is enough talent to win, but will the players buy into it? There are just too many questions, but if the Rams get a winning season, expect Lubick to stay.

4. BYU Cougars. The defending champs drop a bit, but find themselves in the hunt to go to a bowl game. QB John Beck is in the NFL, and the Cougars must find one this year. The WR"s should do some damage, led by Austin Collie-back from a mission. The defense should be solid, but the secondary needs help. I have to admit, I love the uniforms (back to the 80's style!), and the name of the coach, Bronco Mendehall. But the Cougars should be in the picture in 2008.

3. Utah Utes. With 9 starters back on offense, the Utes should pick up where they left off last year. But if the Utes want to win their 7th straight bowl game-they must get help on defense fast-only 5 starters return. The spread offense still works for the Utes, and they should go far, but there are some grumblings in Utah about Kyle Whittingham, who needs a strong season so he is not on the hot seat in 2008.

2. New Mexico Lobos. Yes, you heard me. 2007 is the year of the Lobos, a mind blowing 18 starters return to head coach Rocky Long, and they have a great outlook. They were young last year, but now are a veteran bunch of players. Despite running a new offense (not uncommon for Long), the time to put it in and teach players and assistants may give them a leg up on the early part of the season. NM started and finished spring ball later than most teams. Expect a bowl game this year for the Lobos, and possibly more if they can unseat:

1. TCU Horned Frogs. Gary Patterson is on the breakout team of 2007. In 3 of the last 4 years, the Frogs have 11 win seasons. Only Texas and USC can claim that as well. For several years, this team has been on the verge, the outside looking in, and jumped to the MW to possibly get a BCS berth. Andy Dalton is expected to take over at QB, but the WR's could be a question. The defense returns 9 starters (TCU returns 4 on offense), and that side is as Ron White says "Loaaaaaddddeeeddd!". Remember 2005 when TCU shocked Oklahoma? Texas better watch out on Sept 8. If TCU pulls that one off, the only blip on the radar is Nov 8 at BYU after that. TCU is my pick to be the Boise St of 2007.

2007 Conference USA Preview

Getting to the end of the 'Rent-a-win' conferences, we come to Conference USA, which has teams from the old Southwest Conference, Independants, and from other smaller conferences. The top of the conference is strong, but the bottom, well, refer to my first sentence. So, who shapes up as the best? Worst?

Who's new:

Todd Graham-Tulsa
Neil Callaway-UAB
Bob Toledo-Tulane
David Bailiff-Rice

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Southern Miss-Jeff Bower
Phil Bennet-SMU
Tommy West-Memphis
Mike Price-UTEP
Mark Snyder-Marshall

Western Division

6. UTEP Miners. It does not look good for Mike Price. He turned the fortunes around, but fortune left the Miners 2 years ago. Only 10 starters return on a team with that went 5-7 last year. The offense should benefit whoever becomes the starting QB, the O-line and TB positions are solid-but only 3 starters return on defense. Sorry, better luck in 2008

5. Tulane Green Wave. Tulane has a lot of optimism for new head coach Bob Toledo. For the first time since the Wave had Tommy Bowden, there is an accomplished Head Coach in town. While coaches like Bowden, and Mack Brown cut their teeth here, the Greenies have NEVER had an experienced, proven winner as the top dog. RB Matt Forte highlights the offense, and the Wave's Defense is solid-8 starters return. Tulane will be a good team, but they need time.

4. Houston Cougars. Art Briles has lost Kevin Kolb, so it means the Cougars offense is in a state of flux. Kolb's QB play was what made the Cougars the last few years. But the Cougars must replace their entire backfield on offense, while the defense must address the secondary. Stopping the run is also key. Bottom line-if the Cougars can find a QB, and make strides on defense, they can possibly win enough to go bowling again. But not likely.

3. SMU Mustangs. The time is now, for SMU. The Mustangs have a great young QB in Justin Willis, return young weapons at WR, and have a solid O-Line. The only problem is on the D-line-but they return an all conference player in DE Cory Muse. Phil Bennet has his most talented team-but if they do not live up to potential, he is gone.

2. Rice Owls. For the first time since 1961, the Rice Owls made a bowl game. But for the third time in 3 years, the Owls have a new coach. Todd Graham left last season (more on his move later), and David Bailiff comes over from Division I-AA Texas St of the Southland Conference. The good news for the Offense-no change in the system, so QB Chase Clement should not have much to worry about. The Owls must find a RB, but have the other essential skill players. The front 7 will need to step up for the D, the only weakness on this team. The Owls, who logged over 13,000 travel miles last year play only 2 games outside Texas, the biggest game of the year though is Nov 24 against Tulsa to determine the West

1. Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Todd Graham takes over for Steve Kragthorpe who left for Louisville. Of course, he was at Rice last year, so a lot of speculation is afoot-let the grudge match begin! Gus Malzahn who was OC at Arkansas is now the OC at Tulsa, and hopes to run his offense at Tulsa (He deferred to Houston Nutt on offense at Arkansas), and have the QB to do it. You might think w/ only a limited number of starters coming back, Tulsa would struggle-but no, thanks to the former coaching staff, they reload. The defense should be good enough to over come Rice, but not enough to win the Conference

Eastern Division

6. Memphis Tigers. Question-what do you get when you rely on a immature Division I-AA transfer QB, a new defense in the early part of last season, and a big mess all around? The Memphis Tigers. Now let me say this-there are some good players here. I pick on Martin Hankins the QB for personal reasons (he left my Southeastern Lions amid rumors of him being a whiny brat), but he can make some throws. The O-line is really the only question for the Tiger's offense. Last season, Joe Lee Dunn, the DC was fired 3 games into last year. Rick Kravitz takes over a unit rebuilding. Oh, well, the new coach should get a better team for next year.

5. UAB Blazers. Neil Callaway takes a paycut to become a head coach. I liked this hire, Watson Brown liked the option too much, and it hurt the recruiting. Callaway will run the same offense he ran at Georgia-but if you lack the players it makes life bad. Make it worse-only 4 starters return on offense. Ouch! Same on the defense. But at least they are better than Memphis. It will take Callaway a few years-but the UAB program is in the right hands.

4. East Carolina Pirates. What is it about Skip Holtz reviving programs? He got UConn off the ground, and in his first season at South Carolina took an 0-11 team to 7-4 his first year as OC. At ECU, he did the same thing, taking the Pirates to the Papa Johns Bowl last year. But it will be a tall order to do that this year. All skill players from last year are gone on offense. The defense needs to be more aggressive for this team to get things done in 2007. But a 6-6 record isn't bad for this team-but that may not be likely this year.

3. Marshall Thundering Herd. It is do or die for Mark Snyder's tenure as the Herd's top man in 2007. The good news-14 starters are back on a team that many felt over achieved last season, despite going 5-7. I didn't know they had the talent to win 5 games last year. But if Snyder wants to take the Herd back to the success of the late 90's and early 00's, they need to pull off a few upsets. The solution? Find a RB to replace Ahmad Bradshaw on offense, and improve the defensive secondary. Easier said then done, but if the Herd can escape a brutal beginning to the season (Miami-Fl and West Virginia), then anything can be done. Enough to save Snyder's job.

2. Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Yes, you saw Jeff Bower's name on the hot seat. He has spoiled the Eagles' fans over the years, a few upsets over Alabama, or other top tier programs, but what have you done for me lately? Well, a record setting offense is nice-but a conference championship-even nicer. A safe pick to win CUSA, the Eagles have too many questions on offense to make them a good pick. There are no questions on the defense, but a new wind is about to blow in CUSA.

1. UCF Knights. Central Florida has a lot going for it in 2007, a new stadium, 16 starters (8 on each side) return, and well, coming off a losing season-you go up. George O'Leary can attest to that. I won't get into his famous story, but he should be optimistic. The talent is here to win the Conference, and they will. While a few ?'s are out there, the numbers just can't lie. The Knights will win CUSA, and shock many a fan.

2007 WAC Preview

The WAC is not what it once was. A superconference in the true sense, 16 teams once made this league up, but oh how the mighty have fallen. Now, the WAC got a kickstart thanks to Boise St upsetting Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, giving the midmajors some rallying cry. This is not a bad conference as a whole, and may feature another BCS Bound school.

Who's New

Derek Dooley-Louisiana Tech
Robb Akey-Idaho

Who's on the Hot Seat

Hal Mumme-New Mexico St
Brent Guy-Utah St

9. Utah St Aggies. The bad news is, you can't get any lower than the Aggies. But you can lose your job, which Brent Guy may have to face this season. The Aggies have no direction on offense, and thier best QB should not be playing the position. The O-line is really not that bad, but without the skill players, this offense is pathetic. Defense may be the only saving grace on the next to next to last ranked team in college football.

8. Idaho Vandals. Dennis Ericsson was to breath life back to the Vandal program. After only 1 season, he bolted for the Pac 10 and Arizona St. Now, it's a new man to run the nightmare, i mean show for the Vandals. The defense is right up the alley for Robb Akey, and will be the strength of the team, as well as a strong kicking game. If the Vandals find a QB, they might exceed expectations, but do not have it in them to make a run at the WAC in 07

7. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Derek Dooley has the pedigree to be a football coach. Son of legendary Georgia Head Coach Vince Dooley, Derek has cut his teeth with LSU and the Miami Dolphins. A great hire for a program that used to scare the big timers. Dooley has his hands full in year one, a brutal non conference schedule. But there is optimism, the defense returns 10 starters, and you get Zac Champion back at QB, and WR Josh Wheeler on offense. But don't expect much in 2007.

6. New Mexico St Aggies. Hal Mumme left SLU after resurrecting that program, and made a laughingstock of himself for what happened off field. Having settled with 2 former players, Mumme came under fire for accusing them of being terrorists, since they were Muslims. But now the past is behind them, and the future is now. Chase Holbrook is the returning QB, and was the second best in the country. The Defense should be alright-but you have to stop someone. A 4 win season at best, but Mumme stays on b/c they will be competitive.

5. Nevada Wolfpack. If you have never seen the Wolfpack play, do your self a favor and see them. They run the most unique offense in College Football in the "Pistol". The QB is in the shotgun, about 5 yds deep, and the TB is 9 yds deep. But Jeff Rowe is the departed QB, and a new "Trigger" is needed. The defense is solid, but the lack of help on offense means the Wolfpack may be home in December.

4. Fresno St Bulldogs. Pat Hill had a nightmare in 2006. Having a hellish non conference schedule did not help, but to their credit, they did not back down. The offense revolves on the success of the QB, and Pat Hill hopes that Tom Brandstander can deliver, he certainly has the physical tools to do so. It is not to bad, but expect Pat Hill to get off the hot seat-for this year anyway.

3. Boise St Broncos. 2006 is over, and the Broncos wish it were not. While the most talented team in the WAC, repeating will be difficult, but if they start off hot-look out. Ian Johnson the darling of the Fiesta Bowl is back at RB, and should be productive again. But that is about it for the offense which must find a new QB, and all other WR's. On defense, the Broncos are strong, but need people to step up. Dreamland is over for Chris Peterson-who should lose his first game in 2007 as head coach

2. San Jose St Spartans. Dick Tomey wins with Defense and a strong ground game. Any takers on what the Spartans have returning in 2007? The other surprise of the WAC last year, the Spartans have enough plyers returning on both sides to go bowl bound yet again. If they can break even the 1st 4 games (all on the road), they might pull off one helluva year. On offense the Spartans return workhorse Yonus Davis at TB, but have questions at WR. Not bad for a job many thought to be unwinnable.

1. Hawaii Warriors. For June Jones Recruiting class of 2007-count QB Colt Brennan among them. The leading passer in college football last year, Brennan's return made Warrior fans the world over smile. Now they can get to business. Despite O-line ?'s, the Warriors explosive offense should drive the WAC wild, ala Boise St last yeat. Defense may be the best part, and aid the Warriors to a WAC title-8 starters return, and that is very good news indeed. Expect to actually play a bowl game out of Hawaii for a change.

2007 MAC Preview

The Mid American Conference could be classified as a super conference, but does not get a lot of respect. It should be noted that 4 NFL teams (Browns, Jags, Steelers, Jets) have starting QB's that played in this conference. Not too shabby. Central Michigan shocked everyone last year winning the MAC, but can they do it again? Will Ohio be the best in the East, or will Miami-Ohio roll to the top?

Who's New

Butch Jones-Central Michigan

Who's on the hot seat

Turner Gill-Buffalo Bulls
Jeff Genyk-Eastern Michigan

East

7. Buffalo Bulls. The absolute worst team in College Fotball last year has a bright light for 2007. The Bulls return 16 starters, 8 on both sides. But the talent is just above high school, and in a competitive leauge, the Bulls are waaaay behind the 8 ball. The Bulls must find one QB and ditch the 2 QB system on offense, and utilize key personnel. If they can do that, the Bulls migh crack 3 wins, at best

6. Temple Owls. This team got kicked out of a conference, that is how bad this program, well, sucks. I knew someone who was recruited by Temple, and he told me they would bring in homeless people to fill the stands. Ouch. But the Owls return 14 starters, and rerturn their best WR/Return man in Travis Shelton. On Defense, the Owls have better depth, and that may help them win a game or two in conference play. Head Coach AL Golden has a big uphill battle, but may find the program could rise from crappy to mediocre, which would make those bums in the stands (literally) happy.

5. Bowling Green Falcons. When you lose to Temple, that is bad. The Falcons have gone downhill since Urban Meyer left, and continue to struggle, going 4-8 last year. To make matters worse, the Falcons return 1 starting WR on offense, and needed a new kicker and punter-last year the Falcons used true freshman, and both left the team. On defense, the back 7 is solid, but return 1 staerter on the DL. It is not going to be a great year for BG, but if they go 6-6, it should save the job of head coach Gregg Brandon.

4. Akron Zips. Record setting QB Luke Getsy is gone, but the big weapons are back for the Zips offense. The O-line will be almost brand new with 4 new starters, but ashould gel later in the year when they need it. Defense should be the savior, and win a couple of games, but need to utilize the 3-4 personnel they have to better match up to the opposing offense. Despite returning 12 starters (8 on Defense), you might think fold, but in this weak division, Akron might be looking up

3. Miami-Ohio Redhawks. I think Redhawk fans should be optimistic for 2007. To me, if you return your O-line, and return a healthy powerful TB, and your QB, you can make up for deficiencies at WR. The problem is the non conference schedule (Minnesota, Cincy, Colorado, Vanderbilt) that could do them in. The defense should rely on speed from the front 7 to get pressure, but fall behind the top 2 teams in this division. Bottom line-Shane Montgomery is out if the Hawks can't get things going

2. Kent State Golden Flashes. To many, a sexy pick to win the East. To me, a team that needs to prove itself, but is better than most in the division. The Flashes return 17 starters, and there is optimism for the first time in years. On offense Julian Edelman returns to helm a very good if not short offense (Edelman is 5'11, leading rusher Eugene Jarvis is 5'5). On defense, 9 starters return, and should be solid on this side of hte ball as well. If the kicking game improves, the Flashes could win the East.

1. Ohio Bobcats. Frank Solich spent his time out of College Football watching USC, Michigan, Ohio State, and Florida practice. He talked to coaches about the recruiting process. In 2 years on the job, Ohio Bobcat football is a big deal. And the credit goes to Solich for tweaking his Option style attack for the MAC, and the players buying into the system. Despite returning only 10 starters, the Cats are ready to defend their East title, and should repeat.

6. Eastern Michigan Eagles. 1-11, that was the record last year on a tema that had some promise. When the QB led the team in rushing-and your offense is the spread-you have trouble. The defense is strong, but a weak offense can do them in. Expect a new coach in 2008.

5. Northen Illinois Huskies. If the Huskies are to make Cindy Crawford smile (DeKalb is her hometown), then the Huskies must run the ball. Problem is, Garrett Wolfe is now in the NFL. The O-line is weak, and well, you need a QB. That spells bad news for the Huskies, who were the darlings of the media in 2003 and 2004. The front 7 on defense is the strongest, returning 4 of 7 from last year, but it is not enough to overcome the team's weaknesses. No bowl in 2007 seems likely, but the futire looks good, so Joe Novak won't be fired.

4. Toledo Rockets. Normally, Tom Amstutz has this team near the top. Not so this year. A brutal schedule for the first month of the season could see them start at 0-5 in September. The Rockets need to find a QB, and on defense create pressure up front. If they do that, the season might be saved, but not by much.

3. Ball State Cardinals. The fighting David Letterman's will be the breakout team in the MAC-in 2008. This year, they will have to settle for being near the top in 2007. QB Nate Davis was the top recruit in the conference in 2006-and showed why. If the Cards find a TB, look out, they will be ahrd to beat. But it's the defense that will doom them. Only 5 starters return, and were last in the conference in total defense, but are optimistic. Bottom line-the Cards will be competitive as long as Brady Hoke keeps recruiting well

2. Central Michigan Chippewas. They shocked everyone last year, and now have a new coach in Butch Jones who inherits a solid team. The offense should be spectacular again, but the concerns are the defense, that gave up big plays and points. The Chippewas have a great QB in Dan LeFevour, plenty of help at WR, and the O-line, so they will be exciting to watch.

1. Western Michigan Broncos. I am not willing to let a team with a new starting QB win a division, but permit me to do so here. The Broncos have an O-line that can protect the QB (gave up an average of 1.3 sacks per game last year), and open holes for RB Mark Bonds. On defense, the 2 deep for all 11 positions are Juniors. This is the year the Broncos win it all, not only the division, but the MAC.
