BCS National Title Game Prediction

Well it is all down to this. Ohio St vs my LSU Tigers. The pressure to win is all on LSU, as Ohio St is being overlooked. Bad news for LSU. While LSU has the advantage at most positions, the Special Teams and the intangibles go to Ohio St. They have been more consistent and you know who will show up. The OSU team that hammered Michigan will. For LSU it is all about consistency. LSU has not shown it. Sure they pasted Virginia Tech 48-7. But they also lost to Kentucky and Arkansas playing bland football and using incorrect personnel and lack of courage. It hurts. It really hurts, but Ohio St has the biggest chip on their shoulder right now.

BCS Bowl Predictions

1) Rose Bowl USC vs Illinois

IMO, the Illini do NOT belong in this bowl game. But since it is tradition that the Big 10 and the Pac 10 play in this game, we must adhere to it. This game is not even close, not even a little bit.

USC 50 Illinois 19

2) Sugar Bowl Hawaii vs Georgia

Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt has stopped whining about not being in the Title Game, but had better not overlook Hawaii. The Bulldogs have a great running game and QB Matthew Stafford has been adapting well this season. Colt Brennan has led a potent Hawaii Run and Shoot offense, but the Warriors defense is suspect. Hawaii has always come back against their opposition-but they are playing an SEC team, not La Tech or lowly Washington

Georgia 42 Hawaii 28

3) Fiesta Bowl Oklahoma vs West Virginia

Oklahoma choked to Boise last year, but WVU is no Boise St. The Mountaineers are searching for a coach (read: Distracted!) and are listless. Oklahoma wants revenge and a motive for voters in the AP to declare them National Champs. The Sooners are playing the best out of anyone right now, and this game is the launching board for a big 2008. West Virginia hopes to NOT have Terry Bowden as its next coach.

Oklahoma 48 West Virginia 29

4) Orange Bowl Virginia Tech vs Kansas

The Hokies have had a very emotional year, as have the Jayhawks. But emotion can only carry you so far. Talent takes over in this one, as we have yet another BCS Blasting.

Weekly Report-Nov 28, 2007

Since we are at the end of the regular season, and going into "Championship Week", I thought my weekly update would focus on the BCS Conferences, who did well, who choked on it, and who is the rising star or stars. Order goes to Power Rankings (Last to first)

Big 10

Surprise Team: Ohio St
Coach of the Year: Ron Zook, Illinois
Disappointing Team: Michigan St
Rising Star: Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois

The weakest year by the Big 10 in a while. Not many expected the Buckeyes to get back to the top, and play for a possible 2nd straight appearance in the BCS Title Game. Illinois has a looonnnggg shot at the Rose. After a promising start, Michigan St choked, as did Michigan. In part to Illinois, the Big 10 coaches have to find the speed guys, and I think they will.

Big East

Surprise Team: UConn
Coach of the Year: Randy Edsell, UConn
Disappointing Team: Louisville
Rising Star: Donald Brown, RB UConn

West Virginia's dynamic duo of Pat White and Steve Slaton has the Mountaineers at the top of my list to go to New Orleans, but where the hell did UConn come from?! This was a surprise season for sure, but it looks like Rutgers and Louisville took the biggest steps back. South Florida and UConn have moved into the top 3

ACC

Surprise Team: Virginia
Coach of the Year: Al Groh, Virginia
Disappointing Team: Miami and Florida St, Georgia Tech-and as always Duke
Rising Star: Cullen Harper, QB Clemson

BC and VT are the 2 best teams, and the winner is BCS bound. But this conference just dragged on, despite the 2 best facing each other in the championship game. Clemson can really break out in 2008, as they are the team to watch. Numerous coaching changes already have the future up in the air at Georgia Tech and Duke.

Big XII

Surprise Team: Missouri and Kansas
Coach of the year: Mark Mangino, Kansas
Disappointing team: Nebraska in the North, Texas in the South
Rising Star: Todd Reesing, QB Kansas

This was a huge surprise, and not just for who had a good season, but bad ones as well. This conference got better later in the year, thanks to KU and UM. New coaches are a plenty, Mike Sherman is the new man at Texas A&M, which had a disappointing season. This conference is defintiely getting better.

Pac 10

Surprise Team: Arizona St
Coach of the Year: Dennis Ericson, ASU
Disappointing Team: UCLA
Rising Star: Joe McKnight, USC

Tied with the SEC as the best conference in the BCS, the Pac 10 has been surprisingly even this year. USC, ASU, Oregon (When healthy) have matched up well. But it is the improved defensive performance that has pushed them over the top. Watch out for Joe McKnight who should produce big time if he stays healthy.

SEC

Surprise Team: Mississippi St
Coach of the Year: Sylvester Croom, Miss St
Disappointing Team: Alabama, LSU (Losing twice as #1 in the nation); S. Carolina
Rising Star: Emmanuel Moody, RB Florida

Coach Sly has gotten the job done at State, making them a formidable foe. Tennessee has had a good year, but the Georgia Bulldogs are along with USC unstoppable right now. In the West, LSU outright won the West, but limp into the championship game with a question at QB. Moody is inelgible this year, but pair him with Tebow and Florida should win the BCS Title in January of 2009.

Coaching Changes

Now is the time to speculate on new coaches for 2008.

-Nebraska. Bill Callahan should get the axe in the next few weeks. The Huskers need to find a full time AD, and that might scare off a few candidates. Tom Osbourne, the interim AD has a large spector over the head of whomever gets the job (AD or Coach). The sentiment is to get a favorite son-Turner Gill of Buffalo is that. Look at what he has done this season there. Fans might not like the losing record, but 4 wins at Buffalo can translate to at least 9 at Nebraska. But lets be real-Nebraska needs a coach and an AD-so look to Wisconsin.

New Coach: Barry Alvarez

-Notre Dame. Yes Weiss has a huge buyout, but ND has NBC money. Weiss can and should be bought out, and proved Ty Willingham was a damn good recruiter, something Weiss has failed at miserably. The Irish need a coach to take them to the next level, but one that will give the ratings a big boost. A former NFL coach in Dan Devine brought the program to prominence, and Lou Holtz bolted Minnesota to take the Irish back to the National Title Hunt. Maybe pulling a coach out is a good idea. After all, a College coach knows the game better.

New Coach: Bobby Petrino

Iowa. Look, Kirk Ferentz is getting paid $2 million a year. Going 6-6 or 7-5 is not going to get it done. So, who can you get? It is hard to recruit in Iowa, but there are good players there and great players have been at Iowa historically. Think outside the box here, and get ready to find a hard working coach.

New Coach: Unknown

Georgia Tech. Chan Gailey has not been getting the job done. A great hire on paper, Gailey has succeeded in keeping Georgia Tech mediocre. No telling where they go from here, but my guess is obvious.

New Coach: Jimbo Fisher

Weekly Report-Nov 7, 2007

-LSU pulled one out of their ass, quite literally. I said earlier if you have to rely on luck to win a National Title, you are out of luck. La Tech won't be a truggle, but Ole Miss and Arkansas will be. Should LSU get to the Title Game, Ohio St or Oregon will not allow them to come back.

-Unlike some, I am giving mad props to Ohio St. The Buckeyes are #1, and now get to prove it-if they win out. Illinois is no problem, but Michigan will be. The Wolverins play them for the Title, but since the Big 10 is down, only the Champ gets the BCS invite.

-Since the Big 10 gets one in, who gets the other openings in the BCS? You have to give it to the Pac 10. Oregon looks like the champs, and don't rule out Arizona St-who might slip into the Rose Bowl, unless Oregon gets in the Title Game

-Rule out Kansas as an unbeaten. KU might outlast Oklahoma St, but won't get past Missouri, who has a shot at winning the Big 12. While Missouri will not get past LSU or Oregon on their own, winning out and beating Oklahoma for the Big 12 Title might get them an inch past Oregon and into the Title Game-but don't bet on it. That would be like saying Kansas will be unbeaten.

-I do not buy Hawaii. While they have an awesome offense, they are not the best team in the WAC, that still belongs to Boise St-which will get a BCS Invite. Nov 23 will soon be here-but will not be important to the Warriors if they lose to Fresno this weekend. Did I mention Washington is their last game?

-The Big East has shocked everyone. UConn is the #1 team now?! Just shows how good Randy Edsell is over there.

-Heisman Candidates

Dennis Dixon, Oregon
Mike Hart, Michigan
Glenn Dorsey, LSU
Colt Brennan, Hawaii
Pat White, West Virginia

-Conference Power Ratings

1. SEC
1. Pac 10
3. Big 12
4. Big East
5. ACC
6. Big 10

Pac 10, Big 12 and SEC should get 2 teams in the BCS

-Upset alert:

S. Carolina over Florida-Is Tebow's shoulder going to be alright for this game? Does Spurrier have any tricks for his old team? Either way should be a helluva game on ESPN

Sure thing:

Michigan over Wisconsin-The Woverines should beat the badgers, and set up the showdown with Ohio St in 2 weeks. UW looks banged up.

Weekly Report-October 31

-Real Quick this week!

-Big game is Oregon vs Arizona St, and in the SEC, it is LSU vs Bama

-Conference Power Ratings:

1. Pac 10
1. SEC
3. Big East
4. ACC
5. Big 12
6. Big 10

-Ohio St proved why they are #1, will they hold off Wisconsin? It should be another good one.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Weekly Report October 24, 2007

-Just over 24 hours until the real big game of the week-Virginia Tech and Boston College. For BC it is simple, a win gives them dominance in the ACC-for V-Tech, it is righting the ship. However this may be a harbinger of things to come as there could be a rematch in Jacksonville for the ACC Title. VT QB Tyrod Taylor is doubtful, so Sean Glennon must make the plays for the Hokies, who still have BCS Title Game hopes.

-USC has a shot to get back in the National Title Hunt, and a win over Oregon might put the Trojans in the Top 5. Mark Sanchez is expected to once again start for the Trojans. Dennis Dixon however might be able to use this game as a springboard for his Heisman hopes. Expect this to be a high scoring slugfest to the very end.

-UConn vs South Florida. Now who would have thought this might determine the Big East at the start of the year? UConn got a gift last Friday from BE Refs on the fair catch, and South Florida is aching after the loss to Rutgers. The winner is in control of their own destiny in this now wide open conference.

-Happy Valley hosts the Buckeyes in the primetime clash on ABC. Penn St looked shaky in last weeks win over Indiana, but the Hoosiers did expose some weaknesses in the Nittany Lions D, while Ohio St has the BEST D in the country. Expect a classic style Big 10 clash.

-It is the World's Largest Cocktail party in J'ville as the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs clash. Lets just put it this way-if Georgia can stay within 4 TD's of Florida it will be a moral win for the Bulldogs, who have not looked like themselves since UT pasted them a few weeks ago. They struggled with Vandy 2 weeks ago, and hopefully the open date allowed them to solve crucial mistakes and get healthy. Florida QB Tim Tebow is nursing a sore right shoulder, but will be good to go.

-Upset of the Week:

Penn St over Ohio St-yes the Buckeyes have a great D, but Penn St has had the Buckeys number in Happy Valley lately.

-Sure Bet:

Florida over Georgia-Since 1990, Florida has dominated the series, and this year's match up is no exception.

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Weekly Report-Oct 17, 2007

-If anyone ever doubted the SEC, last weekend proved why they are the best conference in America. Kentucky beat the #1 team in the country in LSU, Auburn and Arkansas played a tight game, and on and on. All you really need to know is which conference has the most ranked teams? it ain't the Pac 10 that's for sure.

-Notre Dame has had a lot of players leave or quit since the spring. This may be good, but it also may be bad. Irish fans need to know the direction of this program. Of course if they pull off the impossible and beat USC-this will be a moot point.

-Ohio St is back on top, and it seems the showdown with Wisconsin is the only obstacle-but remember Michigan St. The Spartans knocked off the Buckeyes from #1 before, and a win is desperately needed for them to cement a good bowl game.

-Cal had a chance to make a big statement last week and failed. UCLA has done well against the good teams, but not the bad. Cal is playing for its BCS hopes this week-beating UCLA now and playing the hardest stretch in their schedule (UCLA, Arizona St, Wash St and USC).

-Boston College may be the biggest WTF? Unbeaten team. Why? B/c BC has not been seen by anyone. A lot of people have seen South Florida, but nobody it seems has seen a BC game. Notre Dame stinks, but Virginia Tech is ready next Thurs for the Eagles-their 1st big game of the year in a prime time setting. They ain't playing UMass now.

-All the talking heads are gushing over S. Florida. And rightfully so. The Bulls may be the highest ranked team in Florida (definitely better than Miami and FSU, and they beat Auburn, who beat Florida). But they will NOT get in the title game. The Bulls may be penalized by playing in a small conference-and would be hurt by not having a conference championship game. If the Bulls take out Rutgers tomorrow night, and win out-UConn is the only 'challenge', then the Bulls may be in the Title game, but I think Rutgers has something to play for-like they did against L'Ville last year on a Thurs Night home game on ESPN.

-Steve Pederson being ousted in Nebraska means Bill Callahan is on the way out. Tom Osbourne is the interim AD, and may be involved in the potential coaching search. Names to consider are:

Turner Gill-Buffalo Head Coach (Former Neb RB under Osbourne)
Brian Kelly-Cincy Head Coach (They can't keep him for long)
Nick Saban-Bama Head Coach (Nebraska spends WAAAYY more $ than Bama, plus with Warren Buffet as the 2nd richest man in the world, and a Husker fan need I say more?)
Rich Rodriguez-West Virginia Head Coach (Took the Bama job until they upped his pay at WVU)

-No Heisman watch this week!

-Upset Alert:

Florida over Kentucky-Wildcats still celebrating beating LSU, but better watch out. The Gators had a bye week, and got healthy watching UK pull the upset. The Gators are hungry after losing 2 straight, and since 1990 when UK is on the schedule, espiecially coming off of a loss, the Gators blast the Cats. Another close SEC game.

-Sure thing:

Texas over Baylor-Guy Morriss may be on the way out of Waco this year. There is now way UT loses this one. NO WAY!

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

Weekly Report-Oct 10, 2007

-Well, what is up with the polls? Kentucky drops 9 spots for losing to a ranked South Carolina, while USC drops 8-9-5 depending on the poll for losing to crappy Stanford??? There is obvious USC bias in the polls. USC should have dropped to 15-20, not from 5-7 (Harris poll has USC at 7, their best ranking). We need to scrutinize these poll voters, and possibly let some new voices be heard, or better yet, have no preseason polls. EVER.

-Oklahoma made a great jump to get back into the National Title picture, while South Florida took a back seat jump. Remember-the Big East champ needs to be unbeated to go to the BCS Title Game to jump over a Big 12 team-but only if it is South Florida. If it is Cincy who goes 12-0, the Bearcats will be unbeaten-and possibly in the Sugar Bowl.

-There is a new team to watch in the Big 10-Illiois. Ron Zook built the team Urban Meyer won a BCS Championship with at Florida, and is hoping to win big in Champaign. Rashard Mendenhall is the best RB in the country right now (IMO), and they look faster than anyone in the Big 10 (Hello Ohio State-Nov 10!).

-Cal may be beaming as the top dog in the Pac 10 and rightfully so. The Bears benefit by having USC lose, and having already beat Oregon, take a shot at Oregon St this week (In Berkley). However, with UCLA and Arizona St on the raod the next 2 games and then hosting Washington and USC, we get to see if this team is properly ranked. This is not a shot on Cal for my part, just pointing out the difficult road that lies ahead for the Bears.

-South Florida and Cincy on top of the Big East? Yet it is true. One coach in Jim Leavitt will not be going anywhere anytime soon, while Brian Kelly the coach of Cincinnati could bolt anytime now. Look for his name to surface at some big name schools this year.

-Heisman Hopefuls:

DeSean Jackson, Cal
Tim Tebow, Florida
Chase Daniel, Missouri
Glenn Dorsey, LSU
Rashard Mendenhall, Illinois

Yes, there is a defensive player here, no one else has a real chance IMO except for these players listed.

-Conference Power ratings

1. SEC-LSU, Florida are still the best 2 teams.
2. Pac 10-Cal and Oregon and USC still good
3. Big 12-Oklahoma and Missouri could meet again in Big 12 Title Game
4. ACC-Big props to V-Tech and BC
5. Big 10-Illinois and Ohio St rule the roost here.
6. Big East-Biggest dropper by far.

BCS Poll

I am debuting my BCS Poll, which takes the following polls into consideration: AP, Coaches, Harris Interactive and my top 15. So, here is my top 15:

1. USC
2. Cal
3. LSU
4. Ohio St
5. Boston College
6. Wisconsin
7. Kentucky
8. South Florida
9. Florida
10. S. Carolina
11. Oklahoma
12. Georgia
13. Virginia Tech
14. Oregon
15. West Virginia

Now onto my BCS Poll, which takes the average poll listings, and then gives the ranking. For example, I have USC #1. I take their ranking in each poll, and take hte total number and divide by the # of polls, so USC is 1+1+2+1=5. I then average the number to get the ranking. The number after the team is my average

1. USC 1.25
2. LSU 2
3. Cal 2.75
4. Ohio St 4
5. Wisconsin 5.25
6. Boston College 6
7. Kentucky 7.5
8. Florida 8.25
8. S. Florida 8.25
10. Oklahoma 10
11. Georgia 11.75
12. S. Carolina 13
13. West Virginia 13.25
14. Oregon 13.5
15. Virginia Tech 14.25

As you can see, my averages are pretty close to my rankings, so expect the 1st BCS poll to look like this in a week or two, assuming the top 2 do nto lose soon.

Weekly Report-Oct 3, 2007

-Can Notre Dame get their first win? Rumors are that Michigan may have to forfeit several games b/c they allegedly used an ineligible player. What a cop out! In my opinion, the NCAA better get off their duffs and tell coaches whether it is okay to play a player-or if he can sit. Chalk it up to the Clearing House-that program is broken and no one seems to have the balls to fix it.

-Is the Pac 10 the best conference in the land? Maybe. The Cal-Oregon game was a great game-but the Pac 10 has only 3 real good teams-USC, Cal and Oregon. Arizona St may be unbeaten, but they are unproven. Wait for the conference power ratings.

-West virginia's loss means the rise of South Florida as a National Title contender. The Bulls are only a young program (I believe only 12 years old), but their rise to the top is a great story. BUT-to contend to go to New Orleans-the Bulls have to win out. Louisville is weak, but Rutgers may be a close one. If the Bulls get into the BCS, you must take your hats off to them. Jim Leavitt has done a wonderful job.

-All is not lost for Texas or Oklahoma, but the loser is out of the National Title hunt. Interesting note: Bob Stoops and Mack Brown have never started 0-2 in the Big 12; so something has got to give. Oklahoma has more to play for in this one-but to choke to Colorado? Texas QB Colt McCoy will play-but Texas needs to find another QB to get ready if Colt goes down.

-The Big 10 may have a saving grace-Ohio St and Wisconsin. The Badgers and the Buckeyes look to be on top-Wisconsin had a game against Michigan St that was the second best game of the day; while Ohio St cruised past Minnesota and those God Awful SWAC uniforms. Nov 3 may decide who wins the Big 10-the date the Badgers and Buckeyes face off in Columbus. Both are still alive for the National Title Game.

-Now the SEC-LSU vs Florida is the big one, on CBS in primetime! The atmosphere is electric, and both teams are in the hunt for the National Title Game. However it is Florida that has the most to lose-another loss can cost them Atlanta, while LSU can play care free. But this is the beginning of a hard 4 game stretch for LSU-homw to Florida this week, at Kentucky the next, home to Auburn on the 20th, and an open date before Alabama. If LSU gets through this stretch 3-1, then maybe they are worthy to be in the Title Game.

-Conference Power Ratings:

1. SEC-5 of the top 12 teams in the country. Proves Les Miles was right about the SEC
2. Pac 10-A good conference for certain, but the only tough teams are the top 3.
3. Big 12-Took a beating with Oklahoma and Texas, but Colorado and K-State represent this conference well.
4. Big East-BULLS! South Florida is a damn fine team, and the sole contender for the National Title right now.
5. Big 10-Ohio St and Wisconsin are the big guns now. If the winner is unbeaten they will be left out of the NCG by a 1 loss SEC or Pac 10 school.
6. ACC-No one really stands out-is that good or bad?

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Top 10

Here it is, my first Top 10 poll!

1. USC
2. Florida
3. Oklahoma
4. LSU
5. West Virginia
6. Texas
7. California
8. Ohio St
9. Boston College
10. Oregon

On the outside looking in: Wisconsin, Rutgers, Kentucky (?)

Florida would be higher if they had not had a close game against Ole Miss, USC is tops b/c well, they are USC. LSU looked blah against S. Carolina, while OU looks damn good. Texas and Ohio St are token picks now-show me something!

Weekly report-Sept 26, 2007

-The big game is Cal vs Oregon. The Pac 10 should be all smiles, as this game should be a classic. Cal wants to take the next step, as does Oregon, and this would be a great way for either team to do it-and possibly beat USC

-Speaking of the Trojans, USC may not have such a hard schedule after all. Sure, Oregon and Cal are the highlights, but Nebraska seems shaky now after having the Fighting David Letterman's miss a FG as time expired. Notre Dame looks like crap, as does Idaho. If the Trojans get by the Pac 10 with even 1 loss (I think they MIGHT lose 1), USC gets into the National Title Game.

-So who joins them? It is b/t 5 teams now-LSU,Oklahoma, Texas,Florida and West Virginia. OU and Texas play in 2 weeks, and LSU has Florida the same day. If West Virginia can get past South Florida, the Big East is theirs-but WVU MUST be 12-0; 11-1 gets an SEC or Big 12 team in ahead of them.

-Michigan seems ot be on track, with a giant at QB. Chad Henne is ready to play, so will Lloyd Carr let him? My say is yes-but keep the leash short.

-Syracuse won! But Notre Dame gets the press. The Orange beat Louisville (has to be the most disappointing team in the country) 38-35. Yet there is concern on the ESPN over the Irish. Screw them! Go Orange!

-Note to Urban Meyer-QB Tim Tebow ran the ball 27 times against Ole Miss this past Saturday. If you want him to be healthy for the season, stop it! I do not want to see this great QB get hurt!

-Mississippi St may be the surprise team of the year. After getting it handed to them against LSU, they beat Tulane (chumps), then upset Auburn (WTF?) and beat Gardner-Webb (easier chumps). IF the Bulldogs beat the Gamecocks, at 2-1 they will be 2nd in the SEC West. Not bad for a team that many thought would be 5th or 6th in the West.

-Sure thing of the week: LSU over Tulane. No way LSU loses this game. But the uniforms LSU will wear? Yuck!

-Upset of the week: Michigan St over Wisconsin. Look out Badgers, the Spartans are playing good football, and have looked dominant in all wins. If The Citadel gave you guys problems, you are in trouble against the Spartans.

-Heisman Watch!

John David Booty, QB USC
Steve Slaton, RB West Virginia
Pat White, QB West Virginia
DeSean Jackson, WR/Ath Cal
Tim Tebow, QB Florida

Coach Fires Back at Journalist

Let me first say that yes, this is about Mike Gundy, but more of an idictment on what i see as a failure of journalistic integrity. In the last 20 years, journalists have made a severe shift from being reporters to social advocates. If the majority wanted ot read commentary columns, that's fine. ESPN used to be such a haven for sports geeks, but with the exception of their NCAA Basketball coverage, it has been awareness of social causes. Now let's get to the crux of situation. Guests on cable shows (CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc) are called in to speak on an issue and then get slammed with something unexpected. Jouranlism integrity has been cast aside for an ambitious reporter trying to make a name for him/herself. But there has to be responsibility on the journalist to be fair. Well, that does not exist.

Before Okla St played Troy, the Cowboys repleced Bobby Reid at QB and gave no reason to the press. One reporter, Jenni Carlson of the Daily Oklahoman wrote an article that was completely false, making accusations incenuating that the back up QB (Who started for OSU) wanted to transfer, and claimed that her sources inside the OSU locker room had told her that. Now, here is where I will defend her. Ms. Carlson has the right to express her opinions. If she felt Reid was not getting the job done at QB-fine. But for her to pull a Jason Blair-unfair! It seems that Ms. Carlson may have done work for a tabloid-based on the story. Ms. Carlson has a reputation to uphold-not fulfilling her own agenda, which is in my opinion what she wanted to do here. As a journalist, she should do honest reporting, check her facts, and if they hold up, run the story. On the surface it would appear that she did that, but not so.

The QB change may have given Mike Gundy a signature loss, but also a signature win. Zac Robinson looked good guiding the Cowboys. THAT is why the change was made-to make them a better team. Mike Gundy had every right to blast off on Ms. Carlson. Dennis Dodd on CBS sportsline (follow my links on top page) wants Gundy fired. Hell no! Mike Gundy may be spending more time on this than he would like, but it has rallied the team around him. I am sure recruits who see this will also like it. If you think a player is not getting the job done, give valid reasons. Making up stuff is for the tabloids, not respected newspapers. There is a reason that newspaper readers are declining. Irresponsible reporters like Jenny Carlson are why

Weekly Football Thoughts 9/19

Well, Michigan is 1-2, and Notre Dame is being lamented by the talking heads at ESPN. Again, where is the love for Syracuse? Here are more thoughts:

-In the Arrogant Pricks Poll (AP Poll) 6 people changed their minds and voted USC as #1 after they beat Nebraska 49-31. Maybe they stopped watching once it was 42-10?

-I take back what I said about Florida being overrated. They looked dominant in the blasting of Tennessee, and look to be the team to beat in the East. Could have LSU and Florida play twice this year.

-How lucky is it that Houston Nutt is the coach at Arkansas? LSU and now Bama fans are. You throw on 3rd down and let the clock stop? Thanks on behalf of Bama fans everywhere

-Les Miles' comments on the Pac 10 can hold weight w/ Oregon St getting pasted by Cincy and UCLA getting waxed by Utah. Let the Pac 2 Jokes commence! Whoops, forgot Oregon! Pac 3 rules!

-It seems that Oklahoma is on the road to the Big 12 title, but I still think Texas will win out. Despite close calls, the Horns have the conditioning, and the toughness to win a close game. The Sooners have had lopsided wins, and made a statement against Miami, but can they pull out a narrow win?

-Sure thing: Nebraska over Ball St. The fighting David Letterman's do not stand a chance against Big Red

-Upset alert: S. Carolina over LSU. The Gamecocks did not look good beating SC St, but LSU fans know to never doubt the Visor (Formerly Darth Visor); the current Tigers don't. If this is a close game, Spurrier can out coach Miles, so LSU better look out.

-Conference power ratings:

1) SEC
2) Big East
3) Pac 10
4) Big 12
5) ACC
6) Big 10

College Football Report

This is the first of my weekly reports in College Football, coming on Wednesday's this season.

-USC is still, and should be #1. Yes, my LSU Tigers looked good against Va. Tech; but the Trojans did not lose. I know the other rankings are different, but not if you are ranked at the top. USC is on top, and should not be penalized by an open date.

-Can you believe the hype ND & Michigan are getting? These are 0-2 teams for Christ's sake! I do not care if they have tradition or what not, where is the love for Syracuse? They are a historically winning program. They are also 0-2. I do not see the heads at ESPN mentioning the Orange at all

-Who are the most overrated teams? Louisville, Florida (WKU and Troy? Powers!), Hawaii (Barely beat a bad La Tech), Texas A&M, and Clemson. You guys have a LOT to prove. Florida and Clemson will soon, the rest, I am just not buying right now.

-Upset alerts: Louisville-beware of UK. The Cats are ready.

-Sure thing: USC over Nebraska. If the Trojans lose, pigs will fly. Besides, USC has Cal and Oregon looming next month.

-Conference power ratings:

1) SEC
1) Pac 10
3) Big East
4) ACC
5) Big 12
6) Big 10

USC, Cal, and UCLA and Oregon make Pac 10 move up. LSU is the class of the SEC, but Auburn losing to South Florida (4th best team in the Big East) causes the SEC to tumble. Big East has a strong Rutgers and S Florida, while the ACC took a big hit with Va Tech going down hard at LSU. The Big 12 made up some lost ground thanks to Oklahoma and Texas getting big wins. The Big 10 is REALLY down this year.

-Heisman List:

Darren McFadden, Ark
Pat White, WVU
Steve Slaton, WVU
John David Booty, USC
Colt Brennan, Hawaii
Ray Rice, Rutgers

NFL NEWS

Sadly, I will not be posting new NFL stuff, but will tell you who will win what in the NFC:

North-Bears
South-Bucs
East-Eagles
West-Seahawks

The massive amount of college football I am working on prevents me from doing the NFL like I would like to do. I am sorry, but if i have a chance to talk about the NFL, I will.

I will talk about the Pats. What they did was classless. How desperate are you to win? When did you guys become Raiders? I do not believe that was all necessary, you play the game and if your strategy does not work, adjust it. Simple. Don't tape the signals and then encode them. I think it is high time for a defensive player to have a wireless communication helmet like hte QB does to call the plays. That might help a little bit.

New College Hires

I will evaluate some of the new hires in College Football over the next few weeks, as the season progresses. Here is a list of who has me impressed:

Steve Kragthorpe-Louisville. I called him a rising star last season on LNWDW, and he is going higher now. He may be at the perfect job in Louisville, and with the chance to win a national title-something he could not do at Tulsa.

Randy Shannon-Miami (Fl). He has brought back discipline, or introduced it to them. No names on the back of the jersey's and brings a fresh approach. It seems he and his staff have recruited quite well, and should be in the ACC hunt this season. Hopefully he can bring a breath of fresh air to the program

Butch Davis-North Carolina. He rebuilt Miami, but doing it in Chapel Hill will be tough. However, he is tenacious, and should get the Heels back to where Mack Brown had them. This is going to take a few years, though so be patient.

Now onto ones I have questions about:

Nick Saban-Alabama. While successful at LSU, he struggled at Michigan St, where he had the Big 10 powers Michigan and Ohio St to recruit against. He has Auburn, in state, Georgia in close proximity (Georgia is where some great Bama players have coem from) Tennessee, as well as LSU and Florida. Also a ?-longevity. He has been at no stop longer than 5 years and his outright lie about not wanting the Bama job may hurt him in recruiting. But how an you turn down 4 mill a year? He is on a tight leash, no doubt. But he might be able to pull off what he did at LSU, just sooner.

Mike Dantonio-Michigan St. He was the DC at Ohio St, and did a mediocre job at mediocre Cincinnati. Is he the right man for East Lansing? Maybe not. No coach has done wll since George Perles, and the Spartans have seen Wisconsin and Northweastern go to the Rose Bowl while they have not. If he can bring the discipline i have read about him bringing to the team show up on the field. Maybe.

Todd Graham-Tulsa. Hired by Rice, he brought the Owls to their first Bowl game in over 40 years, then jumped back to Tulsa where he was the DC for a few years. Like Saban, he will be questioned by recruits about his length of stay at Tulsa, and rightfully so. There are about 100 players at Rice that feel the same way.

Improving the BCS Conferences

Here is my 2 cents on the BCS Conferences:

Pac 10-Great scheduling, everyone plays each other. What they need to improve on is getting their own network. Fox Sports is a mediocre cable network at best, and ABC is filled with the other conferences. If they could get the Fox Network to carry their games (They did a decent job this past Bowl season) it could lift this conference in a big way.

Big 10-SCHEDULE OPEN DATES!!!!!!!! Want to know why USC, Florida and the like have whupped you good lately? Your season ends in Mid November. The SEC, Pac 10 and Big 12 end in December. If you schedule 2 open dates, you can have Ohio St v Michigan on Dec 1, the same date as the other guys conference championship games, and the conclusion of the Pac 10 season as well. The chance of a 12th team joining is unlikely.

Big East-Add Notre Dame to football. Yes, they have their own network in NBC, and they are looking to grow. Since ND is in the other sports in the Big East, this could give them a lift. ND played West Virginia for the Title in 1989 (Fiesta Bowl on Jan of that year for the 1988 season). It would be a good rivalry. It might end the Irish playing Michigan, Mich St and maybe USC, but would make the conference interesting

Big 12-From a scheduling standpoint, perfect. Just settle on a permanent home for the Conference Championship Game and you are set.

SEC-Adopt a scheduling component like the Big 12. So what if Alabama and Tennessee are rivals? They are in seperate divisions and can play every other year. The 'permanent rivalries' are total bullshit. How fair is it for Ole Miss to get Vandy, while LSU gets Florida? Or Arkansas gets South Carolina and Auburn gets Georgia? Ditch em!

ACC-Strange to have Florida St and Miami in competing divisions, but it makes sense. Playing the championship game in J'ville is good, but this conference needs to show it can step out on its own.

Notre Dame-Join the Big East already!

Football Tomorrow!

Major college football kicks off tomorrow!

LSU vs Miss St is on the tube on ESPN, along with a few others kicking off later and around the same time, but this is the first televised major conference game. (Some Division II schools kicked off last weekend).

2007 AFC South Preview

Well, what is to tell, no new coaches here, but the defending Super Bowl Champs are here. In Houston a new era dawns at QB, and in Jacksonville, they want to know if Leftwhich is the right man for the job. In Tennessee, can the Titans pull off what they did a year ago, and can anyone unseat Indy?

4. Jacksonville Jaguars. Someone has to finish last, and it looks like it is the Jags. Now do not get me wrong, they are competitive, but the offesne is the biggest question. Not just QB, but WR as well. They run the ball well, but that is it. If this were an NFC Team, you would talk about them being contenders, but they are in the AFC. BOTTOM LINE-If the offense shows up, it will be a big year for the Jags
PREDICTED FINISH: 6-10

3. Houston Texans. Matt Schaub mania has hit Houston. The QB from Atlanta now has the shot at running his own offense, and Gary Kubiak copuld not be any happier. The Texans seem to be alright on offense, but the defense still worries me. Amobi Okoye needs time to develope, and Mario Williams has a lot to live up to, but DeMeco Ryans is the man on defense, and if his cast plays better, Houston could be thinking playoffs. BOTTOM LINE-if the O-line play improves, and the defense adjusts, this team is going to the playoffs.
PREDICTED FINISH: 8-8

2. Tennessee Titans. Jeff Fischer has a talented "Young" team this season. The defense is good enough to be a major force in the NFL once again, and with Vince Young doing what he did to Colleges in the NFL, look out, here come the Titans. The Titans may not have Travis Henry but so what? They are still a damn good club, and have some playmakers on offense to get things done. It is tight, but they edge out Houston. BOTTOM LINE-if the Titans get a deep threat at WR, think Super Bowl
Predicted Finish: 9-7

1. Indianapolis Colts. Well, the Manning jinx is over, as the Colts won it all last season and might again-if they can stay healthy. But they will have to work their way up to do it. The defense is still a concern, now that Booger McFarland is out for the year, the secondary has a lot of holes to fill. The only hole on offense is RB-Joe Addai is the man now, but depth is needed for the Colts at this position. Despite some shortcomings, this team will still be the one to beat. BOTTOM LINE-if the Colts get together like last year and play as they did in post season, there is no stopping them.
PREDICTED FINISH: 11-5

2007 AFC East Preview

Well, this division is going to be interesting. The Patriots are the top dogs, but the Jets are right behind them. The Bills are the best young team, and the Dolphins have one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Who's New

Cam Cameron-Miami Dolphins

4. Miami Dolphins. Cam Cameron has done a questionable job IMO since being named the head man here in Miami. Taking Ted Ginn over Brady Quinn was the first, and then not really securing a weak O-Line is another, but he did get Trent Green in at QB and they signed Joey Porter on Defense, so all is not lost. Add Ronnie Brown to the mix on offense, and a QB in the future in John Beck who was a great draft pick, the future is what the Dolphins can look forward to, but this year, it is last place. BOTTOM LINE-if the defense plays like last year and Trent Green is healthy, the Phins might be above .500, stranger things have happened.
PREDICTED FINISH: 7-9

3. Buffalo Bills. Dick Jauron has surprised me, and the Bills might say the future is now. JP Losman has developed into a decent QB, Lee Evans and Josh Reed look to improve their play at WR, and TE Robert Royal is one of the best you have not heard of, but the big lift comes in the presence of Marshawn Lynch, the new RB. The Bills will have holes to fill on Defense, but the D-Line may be the most improved in the league. BOTTOM LINE-The playoffs are not to far from being a reality.
PREDICTED FINISH: 9-7

2. NY Jets. Thomas Jones comes in off a trade with the Bears, and it is 'Green skies' ahead for the Jets. This is good news, as the Jets had trouble at times getting the ground game going last season. The Jets have a steady WR Corps, and if QB Chad Pennigton stays healthy, this could be another good year for the Jets, and if they were in any other division, they would win it. Sadly, the Patriots are in this one. BOTTOM LINE-if the injuries are kept to a minimum, the Jets just might take this thing.
PREDICTED FINISH: 11-5

1. New England Patriots. Bill Bellichek has the Pats ready to win this thing again, but the Pats did the unthinkable-paid money for big name players. Adalius Thomas, Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth and Randy Moss were signed or traded for. The Pats filled a few holes in the draft, but the only weakness is RB, now that Corey Dillon is out. BOTTOM LINE-if the Pats can find a ground game, they are back in the Super Bowl, but the Jets and the Bills are ready to close in on the Pats Supremacy.
PREDICTED FINISH: 12-4

2007 SEC Preview

Well here we are, the cream of the college football crop. Florida pulled the double dip, winning not only the SEC but National Title as well. In the BCS era, Tennessee, LSU and now Florida have won a national title. Auburn should have in 2004 going unbeaten that year. The West is clear, but it is the East that is not. Anyone can pull it off there, except Vanderbilt (Poor Vandy!). So how will it turn out this year?

Who’s New:

Nick Saban-Alabama

Who’s on the Hot Seat:

Nick Saban-Alabama
Sylvester Croom-Mississippi St
Houston Nutt-Arkansas
Phil Fulmer-Tennessee

East

6. Vanderbilt Commodores. Bobby Johnson has done a yeoman’s job at Vandy. This team has been competitive for the last few seasons, making some fans optimistic-and wanting more. On offense, WR Earl Bennet is the big play man, and QB Chris Nickson should get him the ball. The running game must improve, and having an experienced O-lin should help. The defense has always been good, and a place for NFL talent to develop. Don’t expect a coaching change, Vandy could do well enough to go 6-6, but if they only win a couple of games could Johnson be shown the door.

5. Florida Gators*. Yes, the mighty have fallen. This will be a rebuilding year for the Gators, but that is not a bad thing, really. Tim Tebow gets the nod at QB, along with 4 other starters on offense, highlighted by WR Andre Caldwell, and dual threat Percy Harvin (Triple threat if he lines up at QB). The defense-well you have 1 (not a typo) returning starter. You have players with game experience, but Safety Tony Joiner is the only one with starting experience. The Gators will get everyone’s best this year, but if this team manages more than 7 wins, it will be a miracle.

4. Tennessee Volunteers*. The Vols had chances last year, against Florida and LSU, and came up short. That cost them the East, but the problem this year is the talent that helped them so much a year ago is gone. Only 11 starters are back, so the Vols are young in a few key areas-WR, RB, DT, and Db’s. You need to have some veterans there to be of any use, and expect to win the East. The road schedule-Florida, and Kentucky will be a test of toughness. The Vols might win the East still, but to me, they have too many holes to fill to do that.

3. Kentucky Wildcats*. This was the surprise of the SEC a year ago, and the good news for the Cats are the following: 15 returning starters (the most of any East team), QB Andre Woodson is back, and the schedule is favorable (LSU, Florida and Tennessee are home games). The Cats big road tests are Georgia, Arkansas and S. Carolina, and that is tough to win the East, but the Cats have the best shot they ever have to get it done this year.

2. South Carolina Gamecocks*. Steve Spurrier is in his 3rd year with the Gamecocks, and there should be noticeable improvement. QB Blake Mitchell seems to have matured since last year, but gone is Sydney Rice, the best WR threat the Gamecocks had. The O-line is a question mark, and that could be a problem. On defense, the Gamecocks have 7 starters back, but younger players are pushing for playing time. I would not be surprised if they win the East-but road trips to Arkansas, LSU, Georgia, and Tennessee will be hard for them to get it done this year.

1. Georgia Bulldogs*. QB Matthew Stafford could write the novel ‘A tale of 2 seasons’. His first half was horrible, then he became the QB for the rest of the year, he was nothing short of spectacular. He is clearly the top guy for the Dawgs this year. The Georgia D is a HUGE concern, but should have enough gas in the tank to do well this year. Alabama and Tennessee are the only road games to worry about, and the big games are art home, so much like Florida last season, the Georgia Bulldogs have the schedule favorable to win the East.

West

6. Mississippi St Bulldogs. Sylvester Croom’s job is in jeopardy, but this is his best team, by far. The scheduling folks at ESPN are making them the first game of the year once again-Aug 30 vs LSU. The Bulldogs offense has only 1 question: Who will be the starting RB? But the defense, well, that is another story entirely. The Bulldogs have moved some players aroud, and to me the staff is not convinced they will be effective this year. But if State can hang with LSU in the opener, this team may have something in them to have a good year.

5. Ole Miss Rebels. Ed Orgeron has really recruited well at Ole Miss. But for the Rebels to end a 44 year drought since their last SEC title, they need to have a ton of things happen, blowing a 2 touchdown lead against LSU was a sore blow last year, but it showed how well this team can be. The Rebels defense has a HUGE question mark-only 4 players arte back. But the Rebels offense should be good, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis is back to shoulder the load, but the QB race is wide open b/t Brent Schaefer and Seth Adams, with Adams coming out on top after Spring ball. If Ole Miss can surprise some teams, which is likely, then they can move up, but the reality is last year’s team was much better, and this is another wash year.

4. Arkansas Razorbacks. Houston Nutt had a soap opera drama last year. Long and short of it-during the LSU game and the Capital One Bowl, he was texting a local reporter with whom he allegedly had an affair with. Then, his OC Gus Malzahn left for Tulsa, and super freshman Mitch Mustain, and some of his high school teammates transferred (Mustain is the heir to John David Booty at USC). This sounds like an episode of the Young and the Restless, but this is a major college football program. The good news is the offense still has RB’s Felix Jones and Derren McFadden, but the QB is still Casey Dick. New offensive coordinator David Lee must find a way to get the passing game going. On defense, the Hogs have too many ?’s, but should be competitive, despite the departures of the top players to the NFL. A bowl game is possible, though not very likely.

3. Alabama Crimson Tide*. Nick Saban returns to the SEC, where he made a big mark at LSU, and hopes to bring to Bama. The problem is, the expectations may be too much for him to overcome. First, he is getting paid $4 million a year to coach, next, over 92,000 people attended the Spring Game and third, the only success Bama has had since Bear left could not get the Bama faithful to lay off. Business wise-Nick Saban fits the SEC better than Rich Rodriguez would have. Major Applewhite is the new OC, Kevin Steele the new DC. On offense, John Parker Wilson is back at QB, and should benefit from the new offense, DJ Hall was the big play man for the Tide at WR. Replacing RB Kenneth Darby will be a huge problem, but one to overcome. On defense, the Tide will not be playing the 4-3 Saban used at Michigan St and LSU, but the 3-4 (the same scheme he used with the Dolphins). Alabama should win games they shouldn’t and lose games they should. But unlike his arrival at LSU, Saban is handicapped already. He has another powerhouse school in state in Auburn, as well as having to compete locally with Georgia and Tennessee to boot. He has already recruited against these schools, but he had the state of Louisiana to back him up-something he does not have at Alabama.

2. Auburn Tigers*. Look out, QB Brandon Cox has a chip on his shoulder, and that is bad news for teams who play Auburn this year. Feeling overlooked by the SEC, Cox was named the 3rd team QB in the SEC. The problem is-only 4 starters are back on offense, but Auburn has another weapon-Offensive coordinator Al Borges, who may be, sorry, IS the best OC in the land. The Auburn defense is talented, but has the stigma of breaking apart after the LSU game last year-but look, that was by far the most physically powerful game of last season. Auburn’s problem is the road-Arkansas, LSU, Florida and Georgia are on the road, and that could hurt them in 2007.

1. LSU Tigers*. Finally, LSU has things going for them. Last season, LSU was the only team to have all 4 of their road games against teams ranked in the top 10. If JaMarcus Russell was back, LSU would be everyone’s choice to win the whole thing-but they will not. Here is what the Tigers have-a reliable QB in Matt Flynn who has become the leader on this team. WR Early Doucet will grab the double team, but WR Brandon LaFell returns as does dual threat Trindon Holliday, who may be the fastest player in all off College Football. True Freshman WR Terrance Tolliver has wowed the LSU coaches so far in practice, and do not count out WR Jared Mitchell as well. The RB’s re led by FB/TB Jacob Hester, and RB Keiland Williams who ran wild in the Sugar Bowl, RS Freshman Richard Murphy and Sophomore RB Charles Scott are back, so the loss of RB Alley Broussard should not hurt too much, so new offensive coordinator Gary Crowton should be very happy. On defense, this is the true strength of the team-8 starters are back on a defense that led the country in a few categories last season. Bo Pelini, LSU’s defensive coordinator has done a terrific job, and the only concerns are safety, but the players-Craig Steltz and Curtis Taylor have a lot of playing time-since LSU blew out most of the competition last year. LSU head coach Les Miles has had to earn the trust and support of the LSU faithful-and solidified that on January 3rd this year when Nick Saban took the Bama job, and LSU blasted Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. The Tigers only question is the kicking game, and road traps at Kentucky and Alabama; and home traps against Virginia Tech, Auburn and South Carolina, as well as Florida.

2007 SEC Champs-LSU Tigers

2007 Big 10 Preview

To me, the Big 10 was on the same par with the SEC. It still is, the Conferences split 1-1 in big bowl games last year. Ohio State was the wire to wire winner here last year before being thumped by Florida in the Title game. The question this year is who will win it this year? Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn St or Ohio St all have chances.

Who’s New

Mark Dantonio-Michigan St
Tim Brewster-Minnesota
Bill Lynch-Indiana

Who’s on the Hot Seat

Bill Lynch-Indiana
Ron Zook-Illinois
Kirk Ferentz-Iowa

11. Minnesota Golden Gophers. New coach Tim Brewster hopes to bring something that Glen Mason failed to do-consistency. To do that, he must find a way to recruit, which is a strong point for him, and not have to play Ohio St or Michigan every year. Well, he should do well landing recruits. The defense will be the strength of this team, while the offense needs some time to develop, but the Cal version of the Spread offense should fill the seats. Expect this team to be big-in 2008.

10. Northwestern Wildcats. Pat Fitzgerald did an admirable job in a difficult circumstance in 2006, even if the record did not show it. Despite going 4-8, this team has some promise, and may finish better than next to last in the conference in 2007, but there are some concerns. Michigan and Ohio St are in consecutive weeks, and the lack of defensive identity-they must use either the 4-3 or 3-4 scheme, not both. If they solve that problem, this could be a special year, since the offense is pretty much set.

9. Michigan St Spartans. This team has still not overcome the collapse against Notre Dame last season, and it cost them the former coaching staff. Mark Dantonio comes in from Cincinnati where he was mediocre at best there. The good news for the Spartans may be the defense-particularly the secondary (surprisingly since the ND meltdown last year). But the Spartans have to replace too many players on offense, particularly the backfield and the O-line to be of any consequence to the Big 10 this year.

8. Illinois Fighting Illini. Ron Zook enters year 3 with optimisim, as well he should. This team really was bad a year ago, but had some close games that saw defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Juice Williams returns as QB, and despite a low completion percentage gave the Illini the best chance to win. But it is the defense that will make a big difference in 2007. There is depth, and speed to cover the good offenses. If the Illini improve on offense, a bowl game could happen, but 6-6 is good for this team.

7. Indiana Hoosiers*. The death of Terry Hoeppner was sad and tragic. The program was on the way up, and fans were looking forward to football season for a change. Bill Lynch heads the Hoosiers on an interim basis, so the future is murky but the present is clear. QB Kellen Lewis was a surprise, and the WR’s are led by 6’7 (Not a typo) James Hardy. The defense has 8 returning starters, and that too is good. This team is ready to go to a bowl, but if injuries happen at key positions, expect tough times, but that is not likely. The schedule has no Michigan or Ohio St, so a bowl is likely.

6. Purdue Boilermakers*. Joe Tiller saved his job last year by getting Purdue bowl eligible. This team should improve this year as well. The offense needs only to find a RB, and they are set. The defense was pathetic, and now Michigan and Ohio St are on the schedule, so that is a concern. If the Boilermakers improve on D, this is going to be a big year.

5. Iowa Hawkeyes*. Kirk Ferentz has done a lot of good at Iowa (winning the conference in 2002, last second win vs LSU in Cap One Bowl) and some bad (0-11 his first season). But Iowa has been well, mediocre. For some reason, Kirk Ferentz gets NFL offers, and some college offers, but stays (good for him), but lately you have to wonder if the time is right for him to leave. Iowa has underachieved, and if they do this year, the boo-birds will be out. On offense, Jake Christenson replaces Drew Tate at QB, and that is the only offensive concern. The defense is solid, but the play has been a problem. If Iowa wants back in on top, they have to improve here.

4. Ohio State Buckeyes*. Last season, the Buckeyes had the world in their hands-until Florida blasted them in the National Championship Game. Now, head coach Jim Tressel must start from scratch, so to speak. On offense, the leading passer, receiver and rusher are gone. On defense, the D-line and secondary are unclear. This would be difficult for some teams, but not the Buckeyes. Smash mouth football will return this year, but who to play at RB? The D-line and secondary are new, but the Sweater Vest is at his prime here. Expect the Buckeyes to field a good team, and be the top team in 2008, this year is just a hiccup.

3. Penn State Nittany Lions*. If Penn State is to win the Big 10, QB Anthony Morelli must have a huge senior season. If he does, the Lions should be in the BCS hunt. Armed with 8 returning starters for Penn St, the only question is RB. The defense is another question, but for all the years Joe Paterno has been there, he is in a familiar situation, and always seems to exceed expectations, so if they are in a BCS Bowl, don’t be surprised.

2. Wisconsin Badgers*. Normally, if you go 11-1, you go to a BCS Bowl. But since Michigan went 11-1, and Ohio St 12-0 last year, the Badgers had to settle for the Capital One Bowl, where they beat Arkansas. But the Badgers must find a new QB, and have to plug a few holes on defense, but the big game is Nov 10 when Michigan comes to town. This is a team that should have gone to a BCS Bowl, and that is a mighty big chip to carry on their shoulders. This team is hungry, but hungry enough to win the Big 10?

1. Michigan Wolverines*. If a team returns 10 starters, you assume they are rebuilding. Well at Michigan, you just reload. The big 3 on offense are back (QB Chad Henne, RB Mike Hart, and WR Mario Manningham). The Defense is a question mark; but picking the talent to replace lost players is there. This could be a big year for the Wolverines. The only worries are the final 2 games-at Wisconsin and hosting Ohio State.

2007 Pac 10 Preview

The Pac 10 has often been joked about being the Pac 2-with USC and Cal being the only teams worth mentioning. That has changed. UCLA, Oregon, and Oregon St have improved, making the Pac 2 joke irrelevant. But here is the fact-USC has dominated this conference since 2002, and is THE BEST PROGRAM-in this conference. In fact, having USC in the Pac 10 has made this conference more respectable than ever.

Who’s New:

Jim Harbaugh-Stanford
Dennis Erickson-Arizona St

Who’s on the Hot Seat

Mike Stoops-Arizona
Bill Doba-Washington State

10. Stanford Cardinal. Jim Harbaugh had a lot of success in the NFL, and as head coach at the University of San Diego. But can that translate to wins at Stanford? Walt Harris and Buddy Teevens have failed to win, even the late great Bill Walsh could not win much in his return to the Cardinal. The good news is the defense, which has 8 returning starters back. Well, no need to get to the bad. 3 wins would be great.

9. Washington State Cougars. You might think that the Cougars would do better with 12 starters back, including your QB, RB, and most of your D-line. But the Cougars are far down the talent chain in the Conference, but if they can shock Wisconsin in the season opener, look out. But they won’t so, it is off to see who’s next.

8. Washington Huskies. Like Baylor, things have been different since Don James left. Rick Nuheiesl was good, but his gambling allegations did him in. Tyrone Willingham actually had success at Stanford, but has found the Huskies more of a challenge. The first 5 games-Syracuse, Boise St, Ohio St, UCLA and USC. But the weaker second half schedule could do some good-if they can go 2-3 in the first 5 games, and MIGHT make a bowl game for it.

7. Arizona St Sun Devils. The Dennis Erickson era begins, with a lot of optimism and fanfare. But the honeymoon is short. The last few years, the Sun Devils have been close. Close to beating LSU. Close to beating USC. Not good enough, this team must win NOW. The problem is the defense-the same problem this program has had for the last 4 years. And that is why the low finish, but maybe a different edge in some close games.

6. Oregon St. Beavers*. The state of Oregon can now be proud-both of their state schools have the ugliest uniforms in all of college football. But that will mirror the Beavers season unless they settle on a clear QB-they are using a 2 QB system, and Mike Riley is no Steve Spurrier or Urban Meyer in that regard. This team is talented enough to win the Pac 10-possibly. If they find the right QB, look out-this team may be good, but the new uniforms are hideous.

5. Arizona Wildcats*. WTF? That’s right, big things are poised to happen for the Cats in 2007. This team got some momentum late in the year in 2006, highlighted by a 24-20 upset over Cal. QB Willie Tuitama is back at QB, and has a bunch of talent with him. The defense is the best that Mike Stoops has ever had at Arizona-and this is his all important 4th year. The offense has a new look in OC Sonny Dykes, who comes over from Texas Tech. Attention Pac 10-Arizona is back.

4. Oregon Ducks*. Ugly uniforms aside, Mike Belotti must overcome losing another high profile offensive coordinator. You might remember when Jeff Tedford left Oregon, the Ducks struggled. That might happen in 2007, but won’t. New offensive coordinator Chip Kelly is going with the feet and arm of Dennis Dixon to run the offense (think West Virginia’s Pat White, but not as fast). RB Jonathan Stewart returns as well. The Ducks have ?’s about the front 7 on defense, and those hideous uniforms. Someone ban Nike from designing football uniforms please.

3. UCLA Bruins*. Karl Dorell has the Bruins back in the chase in 2007. If QB Ben Olson stays healthy, there might be a chance that the Bruins win he Pac 10, especially with 10 starters back on offense. The defense also has 10 starters back. The Bruins only competition is Cal and USC, who they still trail in the conference, but don’t count them out. I would not be shocked if the Bruins win the conference, but you have to look at a team that beat USC, and in their next game with time to prepare fall apart against a weak Florida St team in the Emerald Bowl

2. California Golden Bears*. Jeff Tedford has built a damn fine ball club at Cal. The problem has been-if you guessed USC you guessed wrong-but lack of consistency. A blowout loss to Tennessee, and losing to Arizona as well as USC hurt. Nate Longshore returns at QB, and the defense is solid. The big games-Tennessee and USC are at Berkley, but the road tests-Oregon and UCLA are tough. But for a team that comes close to knocking on the door of the BCS might yet find a way in-but the Tennessee game is very important to helping that out.

1. USC Trojans*. I admit I do not like this team, given I am a huge LSU fan. But USC has been the best program in the country since 2002, and this season should not be any different. Heck, even with a new OC in Steve Sarkisian, the Trojans should be explosive on offense, as they have since Pete Carroll has been head coach. But it is the defense that pushes the Trojans over the top-10 starters back. Don’t hate the game-USC has owned it for the last 5 years. I may be on a bandwagon, but I see USC going unbeaten-but not without having some close bumps on the way to the National Title Game. The only question is who joins them?

2007 Big 12 Preview

Big 12

Last season, Oklahoma had what it takes to win this conference, which began as merger with the Old Big 8 Conference and the legendary Southwestern Conference. Next to the SEC, this may be the toughest conference in the country, and have a superior scheduling system, something the SEC could learn about. So, read on to find how 2007 will shape out.

Who’s New

Gene Chizik-Iowa State

Who’s on the Hot Seat

Guy Morris-Baylor
Mark Mangino-Kansas
Gary Pinkel-Missouri

North

6. Iowa State Cyclones. Gene Chizik takes over a program that may be on the way out of the Big 12-rumours circulate that the Cyclones will be the 12th team in the Big 10. But rumors aside, the Cyclones are a mess. It is going to take a lot to get this team to the top of the division, so moving on.
5. Kansas Jayhawks. Since his arrival, Mark Mangino has made KU football fun. But fun is not job security, so this season he must tread carefully. Here is the good-QB Kerry Meier returns, as do the deep threats-great for a team that runs the spread. On defense, most of the front 7 is back. The bad-a weak O-line, no clear RB, and a an unclear picture in the secondary mean the Jayhawks will struggle.

4. Colorado Buffaloes*. Last season, Dan Hawkins came in with huge optimism and fanfare, then the Buffs lost to Montana State. The season went caput quickly and despite a possible upset of Georgia last year, the Buffs were bad. So here is why they will be good in 2007. First, the QB is the coach’s son. He has known this offense for most of his life, and the other 7 starters back on Offense have a year under their belts. A great rush defense helps too. But if the Buffs can improve their pass defense (which is likely), and QB Cody Hawkins gets hot (he will), the Buffs can shock the world-by winning 7 games this year

3. Missouri Tigers*. This is it for Gary Pinkel-win or go unemployed. He should win, but not the North. Here is the good news-9 starters back on offense, and that is great considering the Tigers gave many a DC a headache last year. Here is the bad-4 starters back on defense. This team is going to be in a number of shootouts-but will have to rely on luck, and you can’t rely on that to win a title

2. Kansas State Wildcats*. Ron Prince did a wonderful job in year 1 last year. The highlight was upsetting Texas and literally costing the Horns a shot at the Big 12 title game. On offense, QB Josh Freeman leads a very talented group, despite ?’s about the O-line. On defense, the Cats switch to the 3-4 to better utilize speed, and b/c of the growing number of teams using the Spread offense.

1. Nebarska Cornhuskers*. Despite losing to Oklahoma in last year’s title game, the Huskers should be back in 2007. Former Arizona St QB Sam Keller will lead the offense, and WR Maurice Purify the Huskers best WR will be back now that his off field problems are over. Defense may be a question mark, but head coach Bill Callahan now has the talent to help answer the ?’s. If the Huskers can knock off USC on Sept 15, this could be a HUGE year in Lincoln

South

6. Baylor Bears. Guy Morris left Kentucky to get his alma mater a shot at making big gains. Well, his heart was in the right place. Baylor has problems that Morris might not survive past 2007. With only 4 starters back on offense, the Air Raid offense might not get off the ground. The defense is okay, but cannot catch passes or make big runs. Baylor has not been able to get to the level that Grant Teaff had left it at, and it doesn’t look like they will anytime soon.

5. Texas Tech Red Raiders. Here is the good news for Mike Leach and TT: QB Graham Harrell returns as the starter, giving Leach a rare season where breaking in a new QB is almost a habit. Here is the bad, the Red Raiders have one of the worst defenses in the NCAA. This is one of the most fun teams to watch when it has the ball, so if you are a Red Raider fan-the lack of starters returning on offense should not worry you. But the defense does, and for a team that relies on shootouts-you need to stop them sometime to win. Not so for this year.

4. Oklahoma Sooners*. Oh how the mighty have fallen. That is where Oklahoma is, after having to go on probation, and lose the most productive player in school history RB Adrian Peterson to the NFL. Expect the 2007 season to mirror the 2005 season that saw the Sooners rebuild. The offense has no idea who the QB is, and on defense the front 7 is just as questionable. It’s hard to be a Sooner fan in 2007

3. Oklahoma St Cowboys*. When Les Miles left OSU to take the job at LSU, Mike Gundy, who was the QB for the Cowboys when Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas were the RB’s to lead the program forward. 2005 was a nightmare, but 2006 saw a lot of good come from it. QB Bobby Reid is back, as are 6 other starters on offense and will have a solid O-line to help. The defense appears solid, but played better in the tail end of the season, and beat Alabama in the Indy Bowl last year. The future is bright, and this will be the best chance the Cowboys have had in years to contend for the Big 12 South.

2. Texas A&M Aggies*. Dennis Franchione saved his job when the Aggies knocked of Texas in Austin for the first time in years. This will be another good year for the Aggies, who return 14 starters (8 on offense). The schedule is favorable, with OSU, and the big game w/ Texas at home. The Aggies will not be in the National Title hunt, unless they knock off Miami and Nebraska on the road, but the Texas game could decide who goes to San Antonio for the Big 12 Title Game.

1. Texas Longhorns*. Ever since arriving at Texas, Mack Brown has had plenty of talent, but hurdles to overcome. Beating Oklahoma, and winning a conference title, then a National Title. That has been done, and the Horns should be in the limelight again in 2007 after “struggling” (Quotes used quite loosely here) to go 10-3. But the Horns answered the questions at QB-Colt McCoy set NCAA records as a Freshman last year. The O-line may be a question, as is RB, but the Horns have a great WR corps. On defense the Horns only question is the secondary, but with Top 5 recruiting classes going on 10 years now, finding talent is not a problem. Expect the Horns to be in the National Title picture in 2007.

2007 Big 12 Champs-Texas Longhorns

2007 ACC Preview

ACC

Last season was a WTF? Or better yet, WF-Wake Forest shocked the world last year making some compulsive gambler a VERY rich man (somewhere). Wake won the ACC last year, but may not be the lead dog in this year’s race. Florida St, Boston College, Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech have all made changes to get to the top, and there is the sentimental favorite Virginia Tech who suffered a horrific tragedy on their campus last March. But this season there are a lot of questions, the big one being-with improved Pac 10, Big 10 and the Big 12-is this conference still able to compete with the big boys?

Who’s New

Butch Davis-North Carolina
Randy Shannon-Miami
Jeff Jagodzinski-Boston College
Tom O’Brien-NC State

Who’s on the Hot Seat

Bobby Bowden-Florida St
Ralph Friedgen-Maryland
Tommy Bowden-Clemson
Chan Gailey-Georgia Tech
Ted Roof-Duke
Al Groh-Virginia

Atlantic

6. North Carolina State Wolfpack. Tom O’Brien left Boston College for this job, which is a doozy. Wanna bet when BC plays NC State is going to be a huge game? Despite having 13 returning starters (8 on offense), things are not bright for the Pack-yet. Former LSU head coach Mike Archer is the Defensive coordinator and it looks like the defense may benefit from his zone scheme. They will pull a few surprises, but the talent is not here yet to be a power in the ACC, for this year anyway.

5. Maryland Terrapins. This is a do or die year for the Terps. The good news, 14 starters (7 on each side) return. The bad news-besides a brutal schedule that includes West Virginia and Rutgers, and road trips to the powers of the ACC mean it is going to be a very long year. If this team can play as well as they did last year, and QB Jordan Stelly catches fire, Maryland might be good. But without a consistent kicking game to assist, Maryland will struggle in 2007

4. Wake Forest Demon Deacons. 2006 was a dream season. While this had been a competitive program, Jim Grobe proved himself last season as a top notch coach. Amazingly he turned down offers from Alabama, Michigan St. and Stanford to stay in Winston Salem. 13 starters are back (5 on defense), but the leaders of 2006 are gone from a defense that gave it all on the field last year. The offense is solid enough to compete, but the questions on defense are too numerous, making a prediction dicey.

3. Clemson Tigers*. A promising start, a memorable meltdown. That summed up Clemson last year. Many had bought tickets for Jacksonville, but late October saw the meltdown commence. So naturally, this is going to be a great year for the Tigers, who when the job of their coach was on the line played brilliantly. Despite only 10 starters returning (3 yes 3 on offense), this team has a lot of talent. Defense will win games and QB Cullen Harper should have no pressure with RB’s James Davis and CJ Spiller (if he can stay healthy). Clemson will surprise this year.

2. Florida State Seminoles*. Bobby Bowden is a coaching legend, but that legend has been rusty for the past few years. Things should change. Jimbo Fisher, the former LSU offensive coordinator has arrived, and Drew Weatherford should reap the benefits of his tutelage. Chuck Amato is back to help Mickey Andrews run the defense, the only bright spot for the Noles last year. An interesting game-the Sept 29 game that sees the Seminoles host Alabama-Nick Saban’s defense vs Jimbo Fisher’s offense, but the big game is Nov 3 at Boston College.

1. Boston College Eagles*. New head coach Jeff Jagodzinski inherits the most talented team in this division. He also brings the West Coast offense to BC, and that is good news for Matt Ryan, one of the top prospects for the 2008 draft. BC has 16 starters back (9 on defense) and is loaded. The big games are all at home, and the favorable schedule plus the returning talent are enough to overcome the Seminoles in the Atlantic.

Coastal

6. Duke Blue Devils. All you need to know is Ted Roof has not done much for Duke, and they suck. If they beat UConn in the season opener, well, maybe it will be a year to notch a couple of wins. QB Thaddeus Lewis is a gifted athlete, but even with all 11 starters coming back, this team is an 0-12 team last year, and the defense is a mess. But whoever comes in 2008 will have some talented players to build on.

5. Virginia Cavaliers. Another do or die, or what have you done for me lately season for an ACC coach. Al Groh has taken the Cavs down the last 3 years, but there is a chance to build strong. 18 starters are back (10 on defense), but here is where the problems lay. The offense needs speed at WR, and QB Jameel Sewell tended to run first when things broke down, and being loaded at RB and the O-line means the running game is trouble free. No questions about the defense, but if the Cavs get off to a fast start, they might be in a bowl game.

4. North Carolina Tar Heels. Butch Davis returns to coach College Football in the same division as his old team, Miami (Wonder how big that game will be too!). However, despite having only 10 starters returning (5 on each side), you might think there will be a let down, or struggle. If this team can find a QB-Freshman TJ Yates was the top man in Spring ball, last year’s QB Joe Dailey switched to WR-this team should be good, since the speed is at WR. On defense, the Tar Heels must find help in the secondary. Without Davis, this is a 3-9 team (like last year), but with Davis, 5-7 or 6-6 is likely.

3. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets*. Chan Gailey is another coach with his job on the line. But there is help in the form of Bond. John Bond. The new offensive coordinator several letters away from having a globally famous name should breath new life into an offense that has fans optimistic, since Reggie Ball is gone. Taylor Bennet played well in the Bowl game at QB-but he had Calvin Johnson to catch his passes, with him gone, James Johnson MUST step up. The defense returns 8 starters, and is solid there.

2. Miami Hurricanes*. Last season, I called the Canes going 6-6, but this year I see the changes. Instead of talking smack, Miami is talking about getting back to basics, something preached by Randy Shannon, the team’s DC a year ago is now the head man. QB Kyle Wright is in a battle for his job, but once Patrick Nix finds one, whoever it will be will have explosive talent to work with, led by RB Javarris James (Edge’s cousin). The defense has been solid since Shannon has been in Miami, almost enough to drastically change their fortunes..

1. Virginia Tech Hokies*. Sometimes you play with an Angel on your shoulder. VT will play with 33. The Hokies return 16 starters (8 on each side), and there is a reason to be cautious. On offense, Sean Glennon has struggled at QB at times, but RB Brandon Ore should keep the pressure off of him. The defense is solid, but here is why head coach Frank Beamer is cautious-Special Teams. No returning kicker, long snapper and punter mean questions. Having to go to LSU in week 2 will be difficult, but the Hokies should still have a good season, and even with 1 loss, still in the National Title picture.

2007 Big East Preview

Big East

Now, the first of the major conferences. You will notice an * by several teams, this denotes that I believe that particular team will make a bowl game in 2007. This may be the most competitive conference as far as the winner, the top 4 teams may only be separated by 2 games. Now, the time is right for the Big East teams to have a strong 2007-and gain a big win in a BCS Bowl, as West Virginia did in the 2006 Sugar Bowl over Georgia.

Who’s New:

Steve Kragthorpe-Louisville Cardinals
Brian Kelly-Cincinnati Bearcats

Who’s on the Hot Seat:

Dave Wannstedt-Pittsburgh Panthers
Randy Edsel-UConn Huskies
Greg Robinson-Syracuse Orange

8. Syracuse Orange. There might be good news for the Orange-the offense should move the chains. The bad news, they will still be the worst team in the Big East. The fall of this program amazes me, despite having a good AD, and a very good (RICH!) alumni, this program should be better. This team has increased win totals under Robinson in all of his years, but his might be the last. The only good thing-Place Kicker Patrick Shadle is back. That’s about it.

7. Connecticut Huskies. Randy Edsel may not be on the hot seat, but things are getting warm. Last season was an abysmal 4-8, and they did it with a young team. The youngsters should be more experienced, and they might get a bowl nod since they have an easy non conference schedule, but this team cannot compete with the top teams, so no bowl game. The Huskies get 14 starters back, and if they stay healthy, can be a team in 2008 that makes noise, but not in 2007

6. Pittsburgh Panthers. Here is the good news for Dave Wannstedt-15 starters are back. The bad news-replace Tyler Palko at QB. If they had a returning starter, Pitt may be in the fold for the Big East race. It will be a growing year, but if this team manages a 6-6 record, the likelihood of Wannstedt returning may be strong-but the last 3 games of the year are the top teams in the conference-Rutgers, S Florida and West Virginia.

5. Cincinnati Bearcats *. New head coach Brian Kelly inherits a very scrappy ball club. Gone is the ball control offense, replaced by the Spread, which means the Bearcats should be a bit more entertaining to watch. The Bearcats are helped by RB Greg Moore and WR Derrick Stewart to make the big plays. On defense, 8 starters return, as does the 4-3 the Bearcats have run the past few years. Brian Kelly has made every program he is at a winner, but to rise to the top of the Big East, he needs a few years.

4. Louisville Cardinals *. I am shocked as you are, but the Cards have a lot of work ahead of them in 2007. Steve Kragthorpe takes over for Bobby Petrino who has a lot of issues with the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. On offense, the Cards have Brian Brohm, who is forecasted as the top pick of the 2008 NFL Draft back at QB-but no Michael Bush or Colby Smith at RB, but both starters at WR are back. On defense, the Cards must replace 7 departed starters-but as much talent as they have, it should work. Big road games include Kentucky, NC State, and big games in conference with Cincy, West Virginia and South Florida, mean that if the Cards win the conference-it would be a miracle.

3. South Florida Bulls *. Jim Leavitt has built this program from quite literally the ground up. He is the only coach the Bulls have known, and is truly the BMOC. He guided the Bulls to their first ever bowl win last year, and looks to make bigger strides in 2007. The Bulls have QB Matt Grothe back on offense, and as a freshman last year put up impressive numbers-and was the leading rusher, despite setting school records in completion percentage, and passing yards. But Grothe should get a break from being the leading ball carrier as Benjamin Williams is healthy this year. On defense, the Bulls 7 returning starters give them a solid nucleus of players who can contribute. The schedule is favorable-West Virginia and Louisville have to play the Bulls at home.

2. Rutgers Scarlet Knights *. Here is why Rutgers will be good once again-QB Mike Teel and RB Ray Rice are back on offense, and DT Eric Foster and LB Brandon Renkart are back on defense. With 13 starters back, the Scarlet Knights want to prove the 2006 season was no fluke-and they will. Only Louisville will be the lone road challenge in the conference, as the other big shots have to come to Rutgers. The Knights have the talent, and still might pull off a conference title, and make Greg Schiano a giant in the college game.

1. West Virginia Mountaineers *. The Mountaineers have what every team wishes-a crushing RB, a dual threat at QB, and a defense that stuffs the competition. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has brought to Huntington what legendary coach Don Nehlen couldn’t-consistency. If they stay healthy, QB Pat White and Steve Slaton will be up for the Heisman, and the Mountaineers will play a big part in the Big East, but also the national title. One way or another-the Mountaineers will be in New Orleans.

2007 Independents Preview

The only team that even has a chance of making it to a BCS game might be Notre Dame. Navy has a deal to go to the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego, and Army, well, they are the bravest men we have in this country. Since there is no conference crown at stake, let’s see how their seasons will shake out, and what possibilities there are for a Bowl game.

Who’s New:

Stan Brock-Army Black Knights

Army Black Knights. Stan Brock is the new head man at West Point. The former offensive lineman for the NFL’s Saints and Chargers has a tough task ahead of him. The good news is Brock is not putting in a new offense or defense. But a team that won 3 games last year needed some new lift, and maybe the younger Brock can light a new fire under these players, something Bobby Ross just could not do. Army has not won more than 4 games since 1996-and will continue that streak in 2007.

Navy Midshipmen. I am only typing this name once, Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada returns for Navy head coach Paul Johnson, who has used 4 different QB’s to take him to 4 straight Bowl games. Not bad. On offense, it is all about the option, and the slot option attack the Middies use is damn near perfect. But the problem for Navy is its defense. Only 2 starters return on that side of the ball, so look for some big growing pains there. If all goes well, the Poinsettia Bowl will be happy to have the Middies. All should go well.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Charlie Weiss has had a helluva time adjusting from the NFL to the College ranks. He coaches a team that has lost an NCAA record 9 straight bowl games, and has been exposed by quicker teams like Michigan, USC, Ohio State and LSU which have taken advantage of the Irish lack of speed. This year will be even more difficult-3 of the first 5 games for the Irish are on the road, but 4 of the last 5 are at home. On offense, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen are battling for the starting QB, now that Brady Quinn is in the NFL. The Irish defense has a lot of rebuilding to do as well, only 5 starters are back. This is the year that we will see if Charlie Weiss can really coach-most pundits have the Irish ranked behind teams like Arizona, Arkansas and BYU. If this team wins more than 7 games, Weiss is coach of the year. But expect a 6-6 team in South Bend this year.

2007 NFL Preview-AFC North

Two years ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers did not win this division-but managed to win the Super Bowl. Baltimore won the division last year-and laid an egg in the Playoffs. When all is said and done, this is one of the tougher divisions. The Steelers and the Ravens have the best defenses in the NFL. The Bengals have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Who's New:

Mike Tomlin-Pittsburgh Steelers

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Romeo Crennel-Cleveland Browns

4. Cleveland Browns. I thought this was the breakout team of 2006, and I was dead wrong. The Browns struggled, but have some good things to look forward to -in 2008. Despite an impressive draft, Cleveland has some holes to fill, particulary on offesne. Jamal Lewis was a good trade-4 years ago. The tailback situation needs to be addressed, as does quarterback. Brady Quinn was a good pickup-but at the expense of a 1st rounder in 2008. On defense, things look bright. Kamerion Wimbley was a force on the outside LB position, and should continue to improve. The secondary looks much better and should reduce the big plays. Bottom line-Cleveland has too many questions as a team, and if Quinn is put in the starting line up, expect growin pains on offense, and a defense that still needs a strong line. Its not your year.
PREDICTED FINISH: 4-12

3. Pittsburgh Steelers. Mike Tomlin has the ulttmate job security. Unless he fails to win a game, he should be the coach here for at least 8 years minimum. The good news is he is not changing the defense, despite his use of the Cover 2 defense as a DC for the Vikings. The bad news is the offense, which looks to throw the ball more under new OC Bruce Arians. What works for the Steelers is a ball control, clock grinding offense, and that is what the Steelers need to do. Not that they don't have the talent. But, things should work well, if Roethlisberger can over come the awful 2006 season. Bottom line-The Steelers will be much better in 2007.
PREDICTED FINISH: 9-7

2. Baltimore Ravens. I dissed the Ravens last year, and was proved right. Steve McNair is still a QB I would love to have, but I only question Baltimore's offense. The defense is one of the best in the NFL the last 8 years, so you can't question them there. They shored up that unit quite well, so they are alright. Willis McGahee was a great pick up at RB, but the O-line is suspect. The only big play WR is Derrick Mason, and he is getting old. Yamon Figures should breathe some life into the deep ball, provided he stays healthy. Bottom line-Baltimore may struggle at times, but they are still better than the Steelers-but not by much.
PREDICTED FINISH: 9-7

1. Cincinnati Bengals. Carson Palmer is healthy, most of the off field issues have been settled, and the defense should improve. All of this spells 2007 is the year the Bengals get back to the top of the division. Carson Palmer looked to me like he rushed back into action last year, and it showed. The Bengals were inconsistent in 2006 to say the least. You look great against the Saints one week, the next, you lose to Cleveland. The defense should be good enough-no offensive powerhouses in this division. The offense is dangerous-stop Rudi Johnson from running or TJ Houshmanzadeh and Chad Johnson from catching passes. Bottom line-If there are no injuries, a Super Bowl is not to far from reality
PREDICTED FINISH: 11-5

Posts

On Wed-I will finish the AFC. I have ignored the NFL and apologize profusely.

Next Monday, I start breaking down the first of the major conferences-the Big East, and the 3 Independants. I might, repeat, might add in another conference.

I also hope to finish the NFC on next Wed, and get that out of the way as well.

Well, have fun!

2007 Mountain West Preview

The Mountain West is the reaon for the new BCS format. Remeber Utah a few years ago? Well, they were the first mid major to win a BCS game, and now, if you win this conference, you might go to a major bowl game. Not bad, huh? So, who will win it this year? Will the champ go to the BCS? Read on!

Who's New:

Troy Calhoun-Air Force

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Sonny Lubick-Colorado St
Mike Sanford-UNLV
Joe Glenn-Wyoming

9. Air Force Falcons. All you need to know is the West Coast offense is the new system, sprinkled with the option attack the Falcons have used for years. This team is a few years from being mediocre, and Troy Calhoun may regret leaving the Texans for the Falcons, but needs time to get things done.

8. UNLV Rebels. The spread option did not work well for the Rebs last year, but there is otimism this could be a breakout year for the Rebs. 13 starters return, but if things do not get better, expect a new man in 2008. Finding an O-line and QB are the offense's top priorities, and establishing the front 7 is the defensive priority.

7. San Diego St Aztecs. The good new for Chuck Long is this-9 starters return on the Aztec offense. The bad-only 4 return on defense. Expect the rushing game to be vital to the Aztecs this year-but someone MUST emerge at QB. On defense, help everywhere is needed. Believe it or not-this could be a 6-6 team this year.

6. Wyoming Cowboys. A surprise to say the least, winning 5 of the last 7 games last year to go 6-6. But the lack of depth on the O-line, and on the D-line mean this is another rebuilding year for the Cowboys. A 6-6 year would not be too far a stretch.

5. Colorado St Rams. Now normally, if you return 17 starters, you might be onto something special. Not so fast my friend! The CSU Rams went 4-8 last year, and the savior of the program head coach Sonny Lubick has fans wondering about the direction of the program. There is enough talent to win, but will the players buy into it? There are just too many questions, but if the Rams get a winning season, expect Lubick to stay.

4. BYU Cougars. The defending champs drop a bit, but find themselves in the hunt to go to a bowl game. QB John Beck is in the NFL, and the Cougars must find one this year. The WR"s should do some damage, led by Austin Collie-back from a mission. The defense should be solid, but the secondary needs help. I have to admit, I love the uniforms (back to the 80's style!), and the name of the coach, Bronco Mendehall. But the Cougars should be in the picture in 2008.

3. Utah Utes. With 9 starters back on offense, the Utes should pick up where they left off last year. But if the Utes want to win their 7th straight bowl game-they must get help on defense fast-only 5 starters return. The spread offense still works for the Utes, and they should go far, but there are some grumblings in Utah about Kyle Whittingham, who needs a strong season so he is not on the hot seat in 2008.

2. New Mexico Lobos. Yes, you heard me. 2007 is the year of the Lobos, a mind blowing 18 starters return to head coach Rocky Long, and they have a great outlook. They were young last year, but now are a veteran bunch of players. Despite running a new offense (not uncommon for Long), the time to put it in and teach players and assistants may give them a leg up on the early part of the season. NM started and finished spring ball later than most teams. Expect a bowl game this year for the Lobos, and possibly more if they can unseat:

1. TCU Horned Frogs. Gary Patterson is on the breakout team of 2007. In 3 of the last 4 years, the Frogs have 11 win seasons. Only Texas and USC can claim that as well. For several years, this team has been on the verge, the outside looking in, and jumped to the MW to possibly get a BCS berth. Andy Dalton is expected to take over at QB, but the WR's could be a question. The defense returns 9 starters (TCU returns 4 on offense), and that side is as Ron White says "Loaaaaaddddeeeddd!". Remember 2005 when TCU shocked Oklahoma? Texas better watch out on Sept 8. If TCU pulls that one off, the only blip on the radar is Nov 8 at BYU after that. TCU is my pick to be the Boise St of 2007.

2007 Conference USA Preview

Getting to the end of the 'Rent-a-win' conferences, we come to Conference USA, which has teams from the old Southwest Conference, Independants, and from other smaller conferences. The top of the conference is strong, but the bottom, well, refer to my first sentence. So, who shapes up as the best? Worst?

Who's new:

Todd Graham-Tulsa
Neil Callaway-UAB
Bob Toledo-Tulane
David Bailiff-Rice

Who's on the Hot Seat:

Southern Miss-Jeff Bower
Phil Bennet-SMU
Tommy West-Memphis
Mike Price-UTEP
Mark Snyder-Marshall

Western Division

6. UTEP Miners. It does not look good for Mike Price. He turned the fortunes around, but fortune left the Miners 2 years ago. Only 10 starters return on a team with that went 5-7 last year. The offense should benefit whoever becomes the starting QB, the O-line and TB positions are solid-but only 3 starters return on defense. Sorry, better luck in 2008

5. Tulane Green Wave. Tulane has a lot of optimism for new head coach Bob Toledo. For the first time since the Wave had Tommy Bowden, there is an accomplished Head Coach in town. While coaches like Bowden, and Mack Brown cut their teeth here, the Greenies have NEVER had an experienced, proven winner as the top dog. RB Matt Forte highlights the offense, and the Wave's Defense is solid-8 starters return. Tulane will be a good team, but they need time.

4. Houston Cougars. Art Briles has lost Kevin Kolb, so it means the Cougars offense is in a state of flux. Kolb's QB play was what made the Cougars the last few years. But the Cougars must replace their entire backfield on offense, while the defense must address the secondary. Stopping the run is also key. Bottom line-if the Cougars can find a QB, and make strides on defense, they can possibly win enough to go bowling again. But not likely.

3. SMU Mustangs. The time is now, for SMU. The Mustangs have a great young QB in Justin Willis, return young weapons at WR, and have a solid O-Line. The only problem is on the D-line-but they return an all conference player in DE Cory Muse. Phil Bennet has his most talented team-but if they do not live up to potential, he is gone.

2. Rice Owls. For the first time since 1961, the Rice Owls made a bowl game. But for the third time in 3 years, the Owls have a new coach. Todd Graham left last season (more on his move later), and David Bailiff comes over from Division I-AA Texas St of the Southland Conference. The good news for the Offense-no change in the system, so QB Chase Clement should not have much to worry about. The Owls must find a RB, but have the other essential skill players. The front 7 will need to step up for the D, the only weakness on this team. The Owls, who logged over 13,000 travel miles last year play only 2 games outside Texas, the biggest game of the year though is Nov 24 against Tulsa to determine the West

1. Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Todd Graham takes over for Steve Kragthorpe who left for Louisville. Of course, he was at Rice last year, so a lot of speculation is afoot-let the grudge match begin! Gus Malzahn who was OC at Arkansas is now the OC at Tulsa, and hopes to run his offense at Tulsa (He deferred to Houston Nutt on offense at Arkansas), and have the QB to do it. You might think w/ only a limited number of starters coming back, Tulsa would struggle-but no, thanks to the former coaching staff, they reload. The defense should be good enough to over come Rice, but not enough to win the Conference

Eastern Division

6. Memphis Tigers. Question-what do you get when you rely on a immature Division I-AA transfer QB, a new defense in the early part of last season, and a big mess all around? The Memphis Tigers. Now let me say this-there are some good players here. I pick on Martin Hankins the QB for personal reasons (he left my Southeastern Lions amid rumors of him being a whiny brat), but he can make some throws. The O-line is really the only question for the Tiger's offense. Last season, Joe Lee Dunn, the DC was fired 3 games into last year. Rick Kravitz takes over a unit rebuilding. Oh, well, the new coach should get a better team for next year.

5. UAB Blazers. Neil Callaway takes a paycut to become a head coach. I liked this hire, Watson Brown liked the option too much, and it hurt the recruiting. Callaway will run the same offense he ran at Georgia-but if you lack the players it makes life bad. Make it worse-only 4 starters return on offense. Ouch! Same on the defense. But at least they are better than Memphis. It will take Callaway a few years-but the UAB program is in the right hands.

4. East Carolina Pirates. What is it about Skip Holtz reviving programs? He got UConn off the ground, and in his first season at South Carolina took an 0-11 team to 7-4 his first year as OC. At ECU, he did the same thing, taking the Pirates to the Papa Johns Bowl last year. But it will be a tall order to do that this year. All skill players from last year are gone on offense. The defense needs to be more aggressive for this team to get things done in 2007. But a 6-6 record isn't bad for this team-but that may not be likely this year.

3. Marshall Thundering Herd. It is do or die for Mark Snyder's tenure as the Herd's top man in 2007. The good news-14 starters are back on a team that many felt over achieved last season, despite going 5-7. I didn't know they had the talent to win 5 games last year. But if Snyder wants to take the Herd back to the success of the late 90's and early 00's, they need to pull off a few upsets. The solution? Find a RB to replace Ahmad Bradshaw on offense, and improve the defensive secondary. Easier said then done, but if the Herd can escape a brutal beginning to the season (Miami-Fl and West Virginia), then anything can be done. Enough to save Snyder's job.

2. Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles. Yes, you saw Jeff Bower's name on the hot seat. He has spoiled the Eagles' fans over the years, a few upsets over Alabama, or other top tier programs, but what have you done for me lately? Well, a record setting offense is nice-but a conference championship-even nicer. A safe pick to win CUSA, the Eagles have too many questions on offense to make them a good pick. There are no questions on the defense, but a new wind is about to blow in CUSA.

1. UCF Knights. Central Florida has a lot going for it in 2007, a new stadium, 16 starters (8 on each side) return, and well, coming off a losing season-you go up. George O'Leary can attest to that. I won't get into his famous story, but he should be optimistic. The talent is here to win the Conference, and they will. While a few ?'s are out there, the numbers just can't lie. The Knights will win CUSA, and shock many a fan.
